Introducing and developing of the modern (1910-40)

The oil painting was first introduced in the end of the Joseon period, but actual art activity was set by Ko Hui-dong, in the 1910's. It was followed positively by several artists so called "1st generation of the oil painters" named Kim Kwan-ho, Lee Chong-woo and Na Hae-sok who finished their studies abroad.

Oil paintings during the war (1940-50)

Disregarding the short period of Korean art circles, many artists tried to develop the modern aspect of painting by their own work. The Korean Modern Art was developed by its oil paintings during the war.

Development of figurative painting (1950-70) Beginning of the 1950's Korean art went through a lot of changes. The competence stage of Korean artists took place of the blank of the former stage, as especially, it's not too much to say that was absolute. Abstract Art (1960-70) In the 1930's and the 1940's, The possibility of abstract painting had already been studied by pioneer artists like Kim Hwan-kee, You Young-guk. In 1934, they organized and in 1948, leaded Avangard-Academy the movement. Reinterpretation of Realism (1970-80) The dominating trend in the 1970's was the Abstract art. With the young generation of the artists as the central figure, there was the reflection of the abstract art. Open Interpretation Open possibility (1980~) The art circles in the 1990's was on the important turning point. The structural changes to late industrial society, the mood out of the cold war, democratization resulted various expressions in the art works.
