<핵심문장>
<핵심 성경구절>
Following Jesus Means Laying Myself Down
“Because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.”
— Philippians 1:5 (NIV)
Paul gave thanks to God whenever he remembered the believers in Philippi because they had shared in the work of the gospel from the very beginning. Their faith was not merely an agreement with the gospel; it had become a life of participation, fellowship, and partnership in the gospel.
Yet participating in the gospel does not always mean that life will be comfortable or easy.
Oswald Chambers reflects on the painful work of God’s Word in us. He explains that God’s Word reaches places within us that nothing else can reach. It exposes self-deception and reveals what is truly at the center of our lives. The pain is not meant to destroy us; it becomes a moment of revelation in which God shows us who we really are.
In Luke 9, a man says to Jesus,
“I will follow you wherever you go.”
It sounds like a beautiful confession of faith. But Jesus responds:
“Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
— Luke 9:57–58 (NIV)
Jesus was showing him that following Him has a cost. Following Jesus does not mean asking Jesus to follow the path we have chosen. It means following Him wherever He leads—even when that path requires us to surrender our plans, comfort, pride, and expectations.
That is why the Word of God sometimes hurts.
It may say:
“Let go of what you insist on.”
“Do not follow Me according to your own way; follow My way.”
“Stop seeking the approval of people and look to Me.”
Such words may make us uncomfortable. But that discomfort can become the very place where God is changing us.
Participating in the gospel means not following the Jesus we want, but laying ourselves down and following Jesus as He truly is.
The believers in Philippi did not allow their faith to remain a moment of emotion. From the first day until then, they continued to participate in the gospel. Their faith endured and became a continuing way of life.
Is there something in God’s Word that is hurting you today?
Do not run away from it. The pain may not be condemnation. It may be the loving work of God revealing something that needs to be surrendered.
Being hurt by the Word of God is not necessarily failure. When that pain helps us discover what we need to surrender and leads us into deeper obedience to Christ, it becomes part of God’s gracious work in us.
Today, let us pray:
“Lord, keep me from trying to make You follow the path I have chosen. Teach me to follow the path You have chosen. When Your Word hurts, help me not to run away, but to surrender my pride, self-centeredness, and expectations through that pain. Like the believers in Philippi, help me continue to participate in the gospel from the first day until now, walking faithfully with You. Amen.”
Key Sentence:
Following Jesus means not asking Him to follow my way, but laying myself down and following His way.
Key Scripture:
“Because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.”
— Philippians 1:5 (NIV)
