  Section 35 : Tujil(投質,투질)... Degrading the Foundation... Article 223.   

投質(투질)은 남의 바탕을 아래로 떨어뜨리는 것이다.

  Tujil(投質,투질) means degrading or lowering another person′s foundation

   (character, status or substance).

언짢은 목소리로 책망하고 남의 걸실을 그릇치게 꾀하여 바탕과 재물을 내버리게 하고 살아갈 길을 막는 사람은

  Those who rebuke others with a displeased voice,

  scheme to ruin another′s fruits(achievements / livelihood),

  cause them to abandon their foundation and wealth, and block their way of making a living―

하늘이 그 숨은 꾀를 부수어 버릴 것이니 꿩의 소리를 듣고 꿩이 가는 곳을 아는 것과 같다.

 Heaven will surely shatter their hidden schemes,

 making their motives as obvious as hearing a pheasant′s cry and knowing exactly where it is going.

投質者는 投下可質也라 (투질자는 투하가질야라)

  To "degrade the foundation"(Tujil) means to bring down or diminish that which

   is valuable or essential in a person.
 
爲呵嫌嚨하고 謀人實過하여 投之質物하여 (위가혐롱하고 모인실과하여 투지질물하여)

  Those who utter displeased and scolding voices, plot ageainst others′

   actual gains or exaggerate their faults,

    causing them to abandon their substance and wealth,

堡其活路者는 天破其隱하여 鳴得雉跡이니라. (보기활로자는 천파기온하여 명득치적이니라.)

  and block their way of livelihood― Heaven will shatter their hidden schemes,

  making their malice as clearly exposed as finding a pheasant by following its cry.

 [Explanation, 풀이]

참된 사람이 아쉬운 일을 당했을 때 그 위급함을 이용하여 그가 애써 모은 재산을 갈취하는 것은

도움은 고사하고 장차 살아갈 길을 막아 버리는 것이다.  

  To take advantage of an honest person′s desperation when they fall into hardship,

   and to extort the wealth they have painstakingly accumulated― is far from helping them;

   rather, it completely blocks their future means of survival.

이러한 일은 하늘이 용서치 않아 그 같은 일은 반드시 후회하며 살게 만들 것이다.

  Heaven will never forgive such deeds, and it will surely bring retribution,

  forcing those who commit them to live the rest of their lives in deep regret.

  ※ '걸실'은 문맥상 타인이 거두어들인 결실, 소득, 혹은 업적을 뜻합니다.

  ※ Vocabulary Tips.

      ● 바탕(Foundation / Substance) : 여기서는 사람의 본바탕, 신용, 혹은 삶의 기반을 뜻하므로

                Foundation 또는 Substance 로 번역하는 것이 적절합니다.  

      ● 걸실(Fruits / Achievements) : '결실'의 고어적 표현이거나 오타일가능성이 높으며,

                 타인이 쌓아 올린 성과나 번 돈을 의미하므로 fruits 또는 gains로 해석딥니다.

      ● 꿩의 소리를 듣고...(As obvious as...) : 숨기려 해도 하늘이 그 얄팍한 꾀를  다 들여다보고 있다는

                  비유적 표현으로, 영어로는 "as obvious / clear as..." 형태로 의미를 살렸습니다.

      ● 참된 사람(Honest / True person) : 도덕적으로 올바르고 진실한 사람을 뜻하므로

                  honest person 또는 rightous person으로 표현할  수 있습니다.

      ● 아쉬운 일을 당했을 때 / 위급함( Fall into hardship / Desperation) : 아쉽고 절박한 상황을 뜻하므로

                  desperation 이나 dire straits 같은 표현이 잘 어울립니다.       

      ● 애써 모은 재산(Painstakingly accumulated wealth) : 피땀흘려 모은 재산이라는 뜻을 살려

                  painstakingly accumulated 또는 hard-earned wealth로 번역했습니다. 

      ● 도움은 고사하고(Far from helping) : "~하기 커녕"이라는 뜻의 패턴으로 far from helping 또는

                  let alone helping을 사용할 수 있습니다.

      ● 하늘이 용서치 않아( Heaven will never forgive) : 동야의 고전에서 말하는 천벌(하늘의 심판)'의

                  뉘앙스를 담아  "Heaven will surely bring retribution(인과응보/천벌)"의 의미를 더했습니다.

  ※ Key Terms.

      ● 投質(투질) : 던질 投(투), 바탕 質(질). 가치 있는 바탕을 떨어뜨리다.

                            (Degrading the substance / foundation). 

      ● 呵嫌嚨(가혐롱) : 꾸짓을 呵(가), 싫어할 嫌(혐), 목구멍 嚨(롱). 언짢고 꾸짖는 목소리.

      ● 謀人實過(모인실과) : 도모할 謀(모), 사람 人(인), 열매/실제 實(실), 허물 過(과). 남의 소득(실과)을

                               망치려 꾀하거나 실책을 부추김.(Plotting against someone′s gains / faults) 

      ● 堡其活路(보기활로) : 둑 堡(보), 그 其(기), 살 活(활), 길 路(로). 살길을 둑처럼 가로막다.

      ● 鳴得雉跡(명득치적) : 울 鳴(명), 얻을 得(득), 꿩 雉(치), 자취 跡(적).

                                울음소리로 꿩의 흔적을 찾다(숨겨진 악행이 쉽게 탄로 남을 비유).
