더불어민주당은 31일 청와대 특별감찰관 후보로 최길수 변호사를 추천한다고 밝혔다.

민주당 한병도 원내대표는 이날 기자회견에서 “최 변호사는 광주지검 특수부장 검사, 대구지검 안동지청장을 역임했고, 서울고검 감찰부에서 근무한 감찰 분야 전문가”라며 8월 중 특별감찰관 추천 절차를 마무리하자고 제안했다. 국민의힘은 이미 강지식 변호사를 후보로 추천했었다.

특별감찰관은 대통령의 친인척과 청와대 수석비서관급 이상 참모의 비리를 감찰하는데, 문재인·윤석열 정부에 이어 10년째 공석인 상태다.

최길수 변호사는 1991년 10월 제33회 사법시험에 합격해 1997년 3월 대구지방검찰청 검사로 임용된 이래 2017년 8월까지 서울중앙지방검찰청 특수3부 부부장검사, 광주지방검찰청 특수부장검사, 법무연수원 교수, 대구지방검찰청 안동지청장, 서울고등검찰청 감찰부 검사를 거쳤다.

민주당은 지난 2019년 바른미래당이 특별감찰관 후보로 최길수 변호사를 추천했던 사례를 예로 들면서 “중립성 논란은 없을 것으로 본다”고 했다.

Democratic Party floor leader Han Byung-do said at a press conference that day, “Choi is a specialist in inspection, having served as head of the Special Division at the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office, head of the Andong Branch of the Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office, and inspector at the Inspection Division of the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office,” and proposed finalizing the special inspector recommendation process within August.
