더불어민주당이 8·17 전당대회를 앞두고 1일 충청권, 2일 부산·울산·경남 경선 결과를 발표하는 가운데 김민석 당대표 후보가 31일 “(충청과 부울경에선) 정청래 후보가 유리할 것”이라며 초반 열세를 인정했다. 그러면서 “(충청·부울경에서) 최대 7%p 마이너스(패배)까지만 막아내면 (호남 등에서) 역전할 수 있다”며 “이번 전당대회는 ‘7%p 역전극’이 될 것”이라고 했다.

김 후보는 “첫 주에 (정 후보에게) 7%p 밀리는 정도면 2주 차에는 비기고, 3주 차에는 대승하면서 안정적으로 이길 것”이라고 했다. 다만 “(첫 주에) 10%p까지 (밀리게) 되면 그때는 박빙 혈전이 될 것”이라고 했다. 경선 2주차에는 인천·제주(8일), 대구·경북·강원(9일) 지역 투표 결과가 발표된다. 이어 광주·전남·전북(15일), 경기·서울(16일), 최종 결과 발표(17일) 순으로 진행된다.

김 후보 측은 이번 당대표 선거에 도입된 선호투표제가 김 후보에게 유리하다고 보고 있다. 김 후보 측은 권리당원 30%가 거주해 이번 전당대회 최대 승부처로 꼽히는 호남에서 압승해 정 후보의 과반 득표를 막은 뒤, 송 후보가 1순위 득표수 부족으로 탈락하고 나면 송 후보 표를 흡수해 승리한다는 계획이다.

반면 정 후보 측은 충청과 부울경에 이어 정 후보 강성 지지층이 밀집해 있는 서울·경기 지역에서 승리하면 ‘밴드 웨건(1위 쏠림)’ 효과가 나타날 것으로 기대하고 있다. 정 후보 측 인사는 “김 후보가 근거 없는 신천지 전당대회 개입설로 당을 흔들면서 호남에서도 정 후보가 빠르게 따라잡고 있다”고 했다. 정 후보는 이날 페이스북 글에서 “승리의 얼굴이 빼꼼하게 눈앞에 나타나기 시작했다”고 했다.

한편 민주당 전당대회 선거관리위원회는 정 후보와 친청계 최고위원 후보들에게 주의 및 시정 명령 처분을 내렸다. 지난 25일 민주당 경남 양산갑 지역위원장인 이재영 민주연구원장은 ‘경남 양산 당원 간담회’를 개최하고 정 후보와 이성윤·최민희·한민수 최고위원 후보를 초청했었다. 선관위는 이들이 허용되지 않은 간담회에 참석해 당직 선출 규정을 지키지 않았다고 판단했다. 간담회를 개최한 이재영 민주연구원장에 대해선 중립의무 위반 혐의로 당 윤리심판원에 직무 정지 등의 중징계를 요청했다.

The Democratic Party of Korea acknowledged early disadvantages ahead of its August 17 party convention, with Kim Min-seok, a party leadership candidate, stating on July 31, “Jung Chung-rae will have the advantage in Chungcheong and Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (BUUG),” while adding, “If we can limit the deficit to a maximum of 7 percentage points minus (defeat) in Chungcheong and BUUG, we can stage a comeback in Honam and other regions.” He emphasized, “This convention will be a ‘7 percentage points comeback.’”
