Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Today, in many countries, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi, is being celebrated, and the Gospel recounts the miracle of the loaves and fishes (cf. Lk 9:11-17).

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 오늘 여러 나라에서 지극히 거룩하신 그리스도의 성체 성혈 대축일(Corpus Christi)을 기념하고 있으며, 복음은 오병이어의 기적을 얘기합니다. (루카 9,11-17 참조)

In order to feed the thousands of people who came to listen to him and to ask for healing, Jesus invited the Apostles to bring him what little they had; he then blessed the loaves and fishes, and told them to distribute them to everyone. The result was astonishing: not only did everyone receive enough food, but there was an abundance left over (cf. Lk 9:17).

예수님께서는 당신의 말씀을 듣고 치유를 청하러 온 수천 명의 사람들을 먹이시기 위해 사도들에게 그들이 가진 얼마 안 되는 음식을 가져오라고 하셨습니다. 그리고 빵과 물고기를 축복하시고 모든 사람에게 나누어 주라고 하셨습니다. 그 결과는 놀라웠습니다. 모든 사람이 충분한 음식을 받았을 뿐만 아니라, 남은 음식이 많았습니다. (루카 9,17 참조)

Beyond being a marvel, the miracle is a “sign” that reminds us that God’s gifts, even the smallest, grow whenever they are shared.

그 기적은 경이로움을 넘어, 하느님께서 주신 선물은 아무리 작은 것이라도 나눌 때마다 더욱 커진다는 것을 우리에게 일깨워 주는 "표징"입니다.

Reading this on the day of Corpus Christi, however, leads us to reflect on an even deeper reality. For we know that at the root of every human sharing lies a greater sharing that precedes it, namely God’s sharing with us. He, the Creator, who gave us life, in order to save us asked one of his creatures to be his mother, to give him a fragile, limited, mortal body like ours, entrusting himself to her as a child. In this way, he shared our poverty to the utmost limits, choosing to use the little we could offer him in order to redeem us (cf. Nicholas Cabasilas, The Life in Christ, IV, 3).

그러나 성체 성혈 대축일에 읽는 이 복음은 우리를 더 깊은 사실에 대해 묵상하도록 이끕니다. 모든 인간적 나눔의 뿌리에는 그보다 앞선 더 큰 나눔, 곧 하느님의 인간과의 나눔이 있다는 것을 우리는 알고 있기 때문입니다. 우리에게 생명을 주신 창조주, 그분께서 우리를 구원하시기 위해, 당신의 피조물 중의 한 사람에게 자신의 어머니가 되어주고, 자신에게 우리의 몸과 같은 연약하고 유한하며 필멸의 몸을 달라고 청하셨고, 자신을 어린아이로서 그녀에게 의탁하셨습니다. 이렇게 그분께서는 우리를 구원하시기 위해, 우리가 그분께 드릴 수 있는 작은 것을 사용하기로 선택하시고 우리의 가난을 극한까지 나누셨습니다. Let us think of how wonderful it is when we give a gift — even a small one, proportionate to our means — and see that it is appreciated by the recipient; how happy we are when the gift, despite its simplicity, unites us even more to those we love. Indeed, what happens between us and God through the Eucharist is precisely that the Lord welcomes, sanctifies and blesses the bread and wine that we place on the altar, together with the offering of our lives, and he transforms them into the Body and Blood of Christ, the sacrifice of love for the salvation of the world. God unites himself to us by joyfully accepting what we bring, and he invites us to unite ourselves to him by likewise joyfully receiving and sharing his gift of love. In this way, says Saint Augustine, “just as one loaf is made from single grains collected together… so in the same way the body of Christ is made one by the harmony of charity” (Serm. 229/A, 2).

우리가 선물을 줄 때, - 비록 우리의 형편에 따라 작더라도 - 받는 사람이 감사하는 것을 볼 때 얼마나 놀라운지 생각해봅시다. 단순한 것일지라도 그 선물로 인해 우리가 사랑하는 사람들과 더욱 일치 될 때 우리는 매우 행복합니다. 참으로 성찬례를 통해 우리와 하느님 사이에 일어나는 일은 바로 주님께서 우리가 제대에 드리는 빵과 포도주, 그리고 우리 삶의 봉헌을 기꺼이 받아들이시고, 거룩하게 하시고 축복하시며, 그것을 그리스도의 성체와 성혈, 즉 세상 구원을 위한 사랑의 제사로 변화시키시는 것입니다. 하느님께서는 우리가 바치는 것을 기쁘게 받아들이심으로써 우리와 일치하시며, 우리도 하느님의 사랑의 선물을 마찬가지로 기쁘게 받아들이고 나눔으로써 그분과 일치하도록 초대하십니다. 성 아오스딩은 이렇게 말합니다. “곡식 알갱이들이 한데 모아져서 빵이 되듯이... 같은 방식으로 사랑의 조화에 의해서 그리스도의 몸이 하나가 됩니다.” (Serm 229/A, 2)

Dear friends, this evening we will take part in the Eucharistic Procession. We will celebrate Holy Mass together and then set out, carrying the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of our city. We will sing, pray and finally gather in front of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major to implore the Lord’s blessing on our homes, our families and all humanity. May this celebration be a sign of our daily commitment to set out from the altar and the tabernacle, going forth as bearers of communion and peace for others, in a spirit of solidarity and charity.

사랑하는 친구 여러분, 오늘 저녁 우리는 성체 행렬에 참여할 것입니다. 함께 미사를 봉헌한 후, 성체를 모시고 우리 도시의 거리를 행진할 것입니다. 노래하고 기도하며, 마지막으로 성모 대성전 앞에 모여, 주님께, 우리 가정과 가족, 그리고 온 인류를 축복해주시길 간청할 것입니다. 이 축하행사가 우리의 일상적인 헌신의 표징이 되게 하소서! 우리는 제대와 감실에서 출발하여 연대와 사랑의 정신으로 다른 이들을 위한 친교와 평화의 전달자로 나아갑니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, Alarming news continues to emerge from the Middle East, especially from Iran. Against this tragic backdrop, which includes Israel and Palestine, people’s daily suffering, especially in Gaza and the other territories, where the need for adequate humanitarian aid is becoming increasingly urgent, risks being forgotten.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 중동, 특히 이란에서 걱정스러운 소식이 계속 들어오고 있습니다. 이스라엘과 팔레스타인을 포함한 이 비극적인 상황 속에서, 적절한 인도적 지원의 필요성이 점점 더 시급해지고 있는 가자 지구와 다른 지역에서 사람들이 겪는 일상적인 고통이 잊혀질 위험에 처해있습니다.

Today more than ever, humanity cries out and calls for peace. This is a cry that requires responsibility and reason, and it must not be drowned out by the din of weapons or the rhetoric that incites conflict. Every member of the international community has a moral responsibility to stop the tragedy of war before it becomes an irreparable chasm. There are no “distant” conflicts when human dignity is at stake.

오늘날 인류는 그 어느 때보다 평화를 외치며 간절히 요구합니다. 이는 책임감과 이성을 요구하는 외침이며, 무기의 소음이나 갈등을 조장하는 미사여구에 묻혀서는 안 됩니다. 국제 사회의 모든 구성원은 전쟁의 비극이 돌이킬 수 없는 심연이 되기 전에 막아야 할 도덕적 책임이 있습니다. 인간의 존엄성이 걸려 있을 때에 “멀리 떨어져 있는” 갈등이란 없습니다.

War does not solve problems; on the contrary, it amplifies them and inflicts deep wounds on the history of peoples, which take generations to heal. No armed victory can compensate for the pain of mothers, the fear of children, or stolen futures.

전쟁은 문제를 해결하지 못합니다. 오히려 문제를 증폭시키고 민족의 역사에 깊은 상처를 남기고, 이러한 상처는 치유되기까지 여러 세대가 걸립니다. 어떤 무력적 승리도 어머니의 고통, 아이들의 두려움, 그리고 빼앗긴 미래를 보상할 수 없습니다.

May diplomacy silence the weapons! May nations chart their futures with works of peace, not with violence and bloodstained conflicts!

외교가 무기를 침묵시키게 하소서! 모든 나라가 폭력과 피비린내 나는 갈등이 아닌 평화를 위한 노력으로 미래를 설계하게 하소서!
