NIV도 바울의 마음을 “I am compelled to preach”라고 표현합니다.
<오늘의 결단>
Obey God Rather Than People
“Peter and the other apostles replied: ‘We must obey God rather than human beings!’
Acts 5:29
There are times when courage is required to share the gospel. Sometimes it may seem easier to remain silent because we are concerned about how people will respond. Yet the gospel is not something entrusted to us for our comfort. It is a mission entrusted to us by God.
Peter and the apostles had been commanded by religious leaders not to preach in the name of Jesus. But they established a clear priority: they had to obey God rather than people. For them, proclaiming the gospel was not simply an option that could be abandoned whenever it became difficult.
Oswald Chambers reflects on 1 Corinthians 9:16 by describing the call to preach the gospel as a compelling necessity. Paul says, “I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” The gospel was not a matter of personal pride or convenience for Paul. It was a divine calling entrusted to him.
The same truth challenges us today. We should not allow fear of people's opinions to silence our witness. This does not mean that every Christian has received the same ministry or calling as a preacher. But every believer who has received the grace of the gospel is called to testify to Christ through life and witness. Chambers likewise distinguishes this calling to testify from the particular calling to preach as a minister of the gospel.
Today, our obedience is not measured by the applause of people. Even when no one notices, we can pray for one soul, speak a word of grace, and reveal Jesus Christ through our lives.
The call to share the gospel is not merely a matter of personal convenience; it is a mission entrusted to us by God.
Let us look to God rather than people today. Let us pray, “Lord, whom do You want me to share the gospel with?” When God places someone on our hearts, may we not delay but respond in obedience.
“We must obey God rather than human beings.”
<Scripture for Meditation — 1 Corinthians 9:16>
“For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!”
