Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 2:1~7 - To the Church in Ephesus, perseverance but you have forsaken your first love
Revelation 2:2~3 – I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance…
<Revelation> 2:2 - I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. (NIV); I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: (KJV)
2:3 - You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. (NIV); And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. (KJV)
○ ‘Your deeds (or works)’ means “you cannot tolerate wicked men“ in the next sentence. 'The wicked' means 'the unrighteous’ as the same meaning of ‘the wrong’ and ‘the vile’ as written in <Revelation> 22:11, saying, "Let him who does wrong continue to do wrong; let him who is vile continue to be vile; let him who does right continue to do right; and let him who is holy continue to be holy“ (NIV).
○ ‘Your hard work (or labor)’ means “you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false” in the next sentence.
☞ As I briefly mentioned in <Bible Matrix ⑦_146>, it was not long after Christianity appeared, so the doctrine was not clearly established. Moreover, as soon as the apostles were absent, such as the martyrdom of Paul and Timothy, and the exile of John to Patmos, false doctrines such as various heresies (Heretic Theologies) and the Nicolaitans (Nicholaism) of 'spirit-body dualism’ and false apostles flooded in like waves. Therefore, the church in Ephesus needed a clear head to test them and discern the false doctrines and apostles.
☞ Pls read ‘Paul’s warning on savage wolves in advance’: The apostle Paul had previously met the elders of the church in Ephesus on the shore of Miletus and warned them in advance, saying, “After I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock” (Acts 20:29).
☞ Pls read ‘They defeated false doctrines and false apostles’: The elders remembered these words, and always held on to the words of the apostolic teaching taught by the apostle Paul, Timothy and the apostle John, and stood firm in the truth, not being swayed by false doctrines and false apostles (flooding in like waves), and revealed that they were false doctrines and false apostles and finally defeated them. In this respect, Jesus praises the church in Ephesus for their hard work.
○ “Your perseverance” means “You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary” in the next verse.
☞ Pls read ‘They endured hardships for the name of Jesus’: At that time, the church in Ephesus was the largest city in Asia Minor as a commercial and military hub. And the city had the largest heathen temple, that is, the Temple of Artemis, and there were harlots in it, where dirty heathen rituals were performed. In addition, there were many magicians and fortunetellers, so it was a city where all kinds of religions flourished. Such mixed pagan cultures, obscene worldly cultures, polytheistic religions, and even Emperor Worship surrounded, all these pressured the church in Ephesus. However, the church in Ephesus did not give up and endured for the name of Jesus. Jesus praises the church in Ephesus for their zeal and perseverance.
