쿠팡이 올해 2분기 8350억원의 영업손실을 기록했다. 2021년 2분기 이후 5년 만의 분기 기준 최대 손실이다. 작년 말 대규모 개인정보 유출과 관련해 최근 부과된 개인정보보호위원회의 과징금, 그리고 고객 유치를 위한 마케팅과 프로모션 비용 확대가 영향을 미쳤다.

쿠팡 모회사인 미국 쿠팡Inc는 5일 미 증권거래위원회(SEC)에 제출한 연결 실적 보고서에서 2분기 매출 88억5600만달러(13조3007억원), 영업손실 5억5600만달러(8350억원)를 기록했다고 밝혔다. 작년 동기 대비 매출은 4% 늘었지만, 영업이익은 1조원 안팎 줄며 적자 전환했다.

올 상반기 영업손실(약 1조1895억원)은 쿠팡Inc의 지난 2년 치 합산 영업이익(1조2813억원)과 맞먹는 수준이다. 쿠팡은 개인정보 유출 여파가 실적에 본격 반영된 지난 1분기(영업손실 3545억원)에 이어, 2분기 연속 적자를 기록했다. 2분기 적자 규모는 쿠팡Inc의 2021년 뉴욕 증시 상장 후 분기 기준 역대 최대다. 상장 이후 종전 쿠팡의 최대 분기 영업손실은 2021년 2분기에 기록한 5773억원이었다.

올 2분기 쿠팡의 영업손실이 1분기보다 확대된 배경엔 개인정보 유출 사고에 대해 개인정보보호위원회가 지난 6월 결정한 약 6247억원의 과징금이 있다. 앞서 쿠팡Inc는 “추산된 과징금 약 4억1000만달러(6247억원)가 2분기 실적에 판매 및 관리비로 반영될 것”이라고 공시했다. 쿠팡은 과징금 처분에 불복해 행정소송을 제기했지만, 소송 결과와 관계없이 과징금이 회계상 비용으로 우선 반영됐다.

개인정보 유출 사고로 인한 고객 감소세는 꺾였다. 쿠팡의 로켓배송 등 프로덕트 커머스 분야 2분기 활성 고객(해당 기간 제품을 한 번이라도 산 고객)은 2470만명으로, 작년 동기 대비 3% 늘었다. 지난 1분기엔 활성 고객 수가 2390만명으로 개인정보 유출 사고가 확인된 작년 4분기(2460만명) 대비 적었는데, 사고 이전 수준을 회복한 것이다. 고객 유치를 위한 각종 비용 증가 역시 수익성을 악화시켰다. 개보위 과징금을 제외한 판매관리비는 26억달러로, 매출의 29.8%에 달했다. 비율이 전년 동기 대비 1.5%포인트 늘었다.

김범석 쿠팡Inc 의장은 이날 2분기 실적 콘퍼런스콜에서 “지출이 감소한 고객은 전체의 일부로, 대부분의 고객이 복귀한 상태”라며 “신규 고객 유입과 함께, 와우 멤버십 회원 수는 (개인정보) 사고 발생 전의 수준을 넘어섰다”고 했다.

한편, 이날 쿠팡Inc는 지난달 발생한 인천 물류센터 화재 관련 손실 규모를 2억4600만달러(약 3500억원)로 추산했다. 화재 발생 전 해당 시설의 자체 보유 재고·고정자산의 총 장부 가치, 해당 시설에 보관되어 있던 판매자들의 재고자산 관련 의무지급액 등을 합한 수치다. 쿠팡Inc는 “인천 물류센터 화재로 인한 손실은 올 3분기를 시작으로 (실적에) 인식될 예정”이라며 “화재와 관련해 현재 시점에서 파악되지 않았거나 수량화할 수 없는 추가 부채 및 비용을 부담할 수 있다”고 했다.

또 쿠팡Inc는 지난 6월 국세청에서 2억800만달러(약 3000억원)의 과세 예고 통지를 받았고, 이에 불복 절차를 밟겠다고 밝혔다. 2021년부터 2025년까지 쿠팡의 한국 자회사에 대한 법인세 및 부가가치세 신고 내역 세무조사와 관련된 과세다. 쿠팡Inc는 국세청 과세와 관련, “행정적 구제 절차를 밟고, 필요시 사법 소송을 통해 당사 입장을 적극적으로 소명할 계획”이라고 했다.

Coupang Inc., the parent company of Coupang, announced in a consolidated financial report submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the 5th that it recorded sales of 8.856 billion dollars, 13.3007 trillion Korean won, and an operating loss of 556 million dollars, 835 billion Korean won, in the second quarter. Earlier, Coupang Inc. disclosed that “the estimated fine of approximately 410 million dollars, 624.7 billion Korean won, will be reflected as sales and administrative expenses in the second-quarter results.” Although Coupang filed an administrative lawsuit against the fine, the cost was prioritized in the accounting records regardless of the lawsuit’s outcome.

The decline in customers due to the personal information leak has reversed. In the second quarter, the number of active customers (those who purchased products at least once during the period) in Coupang’s product commerce sectors, such as Rocket Delivery, was 24.7 million people, a 3% increase compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter, the number of active customers was 23.9 million, lower than the 24.6 million recorded in the fourth quarter of last year when the leak was confirmed, but it has now recovered to pre-leak levels. The increase in various costs to attract customers also worsened profitability. Excluding the fine from the Personal Information Protection Commission, sales and administrative expenses amounted to 2.6 billion dollars, accounting for 29.8% of sales. This figure includes the total book value of inventory and fixed assets owned by the facility before the fire, as well as the obligatory payments related to the inventory assets of sellers stored there. Coupang Inc. stated, “The loss from the Incheon logistics center fire will be recognized in the financial results starting from the third quarter of this year,” adding, “There is a possibility of incurring additional liabilities and costs related to the fire that have not been identified or quantified at this point.”

Additionally, Coupang Inc. received a tax assessment notice of 208 million dollars, approximately 300 billion Korean won, from the National Tax Service in June and announced plans to appeal the decision. The assessment is related to a tax audit of corporate and value-added tax filings for Coupang’s Korean subsidiaries from 2021 to 2025. Regarding the National Tax Service’s assessment, Coupang Inc. stated, “We plan to pursue administrative relief procedures and, if necessary, actively present our position through judicial litigation.”
