Peter answers Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” by saying, “The Christ of God.” There is a difference between how others know Jesus and how Peter knows Him. Peter’s answer is correct—knowing Jesus is faith. And it is through that faith we are saved. In the parallel passage in Matthew, Jesus says He will give the keys of the kingdom of heaven. This faith in knowing Jesus is that valuable.
Following Jesus means denying oneself (self-forgetfulness) - denying our ego, our own opinions, our experiences, and our plans. Jesus also said that we must take up our cross daily. The cross refers to the work God has assigned to us, which involves gaining people. It represents the dedication and effort we pour into others.
Do not be ashamed to confess Jesus. With boldness in faith, let’s show that we are believers wherever we are, not being ashamed of our faith in our words and actions. Let’s live by faith so that our family, relatives, workplace, and neighbors know that we are believers. This is because we are called to bear witness to Jesus.
