: The Faith That Knows How to Come Down
“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
Colossians 3:20 (NIV)
There are times in our faith when we experience what we might call a “mountaintop.” We experience God deeply in prayer, receive a fresh understanding of His Word, and feel our hearts filled with His grace.
In Mark 9, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, where they witnessed His glory in the Transfiguration. Peter wanted to remain there. But Jesus led His disciples back down the mountain.
Why? Because the purpose was not to remain on the mountain, but to follow Jesus in the valley of ordinary life.
Oswald Chambers points out that the test of spiritual life is not simply how high we can rise, but whether we have the power to descend. Spiritual selfishness wants to remain on the mountaintop—to remain where we feel spiritually fulfilled, comfortable, and inspired. But Jesus calls His disciples back into ordinary life.
Colossians 3:20 shows us where our faith is actually tested:
“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
Faith is not demonstrated only through extraordinary spiritual experiences. It is also demonstrated in ordinary obedience—in listening to our parents, caring for our family, yielding our preferences, and putting others before ourselves.
If we have received grace on the mountain, we must live out obedience in the valley.
We may love talking about God while refusing to listen to those closest to us. We may know the Word while still insisting on having our own way. When that happens, the grace we experienced on the mountain has not yet reached our everyday lives.
True faith is not the ability to remain where we want to be. It is the willingness to go where Jesus sends us.
Perhaps today God is asking you to lay something down: your pride, your insistence on being right, your desire to be recognized, or simply your unwillingness to listen.
The person who knows how to come down is the person who is learning to truly follow Jesus.
Where is the “mountaintop” where you want to remain today? And where is the “valley” into which Jesus is calling you?
Let the grace you received on the mountain become obedience in the valley.
“Lord, help me choose where You are sending me rather than where I simply want to remain.”
