- 영한 : ~(one's)가 하지도 않은 말을 했다고 한다.

- 영영 : to say that someone means one thing when the person really meant something else

- 예문 :

어맨다: 어 그런 것같긴 한데.

1st driver: Good! Tell her it was her fault.
운전자 1: 잘됐군요! 저 여자 잘못이라고 말씀해주시죠.

2nd driver: Don't put words in her mouth. It was her fault.
운전자 2: 하지도 않은 말을 하도록 부추기지 마세요. 저 여자 잘못이죠.

Amanda: Please don't put me on the spot.
어맨다: 저한테 그러지 마세요.

1st driver: Just tell us what you saw.
운전자 1: 그저 본대로 얘기해주세요.

Amanda: We'd better call the police.
어맨다: 경찰을 부르는게 좋겠군요.


[기억할만한 표현]
▶ back up: 후진하다
"The truck will back up when no one is behind him." 
(트럭은 뒤에 아무도 없을 때만 후진할 겁니다.)

▶ sort of: 대략은
Father: "Did you do your homework?" (너 숙제 했니?)
Son: "Well sort of." (어 했다고 할 수 있죠.)

▶ put (one) on the spot: ~에게 대답하고 싶지 않은 질문을 하다
"She always puts her friends on the spot."
(그 여자는 항상 친구들에게 곤란한 질문을 합니다.)
