여우(fox)
히브리어 "슈-알"를 번역한 것이다. 이 단어는 거의 모든 성경에서 '여우'로 번역하고 있다. 여우는 유럽에서 아시아에 걸쳐 신 아시아대륙, 일본 그리고 북 아프리카와 넓은 북반구에 널려져 있는 동물이다. 더구나 민가 근처에 살고있기 때문에 동서양을 걸쳐 여러 가지 민화와 전설에 등장한 동물이다. 농가 가까운 산림과 전답 등에 출현해 때로는 닭과 새끼 등을 잡아가기도 하고 작물을 망치는 일도 있다. 동물원에서 너구리와 여우를 도망가게 할 때도 있다. 그럴 때에 너구리는 배를 주려서 근처 민가 부엌 뒤에서 남은 찌꺼기를 먹고 몇 일을 맴돌지만 여우는 쥐와 작은새를 잡아먹기 때문일까? 잡는 것이 쉽지 않을 때가 있다. 그렇기 때문에 같은 일본 민화에서도 너구리는 어느 쪽인가 하면 약간의 사이를 두고 애교 띤 괴물로 변하기도 하는 쪽이지만 여우는 사람을 속이는 존재로 알려져 있다.
이러한 여우들을 사람들은 꾀 많은 교활한 동물로 보고 있다. 삼손이 여우 삼백 마리를 잡아 꼬리를 서로 비끌어 매고는 두 꼬리를 맨 사이에 준비해 두었던 홰를 하나씩 매달아 놓고 그 홰에 불을 붙인 다음 여우들을 불레셋 사람 곡식밭으로 내몰았다. 이렇게 하여 그는 곡식 가리 뿐 아니라 베지 않은 곡식과 포도덩굴과 올리브나무까지 태워 버렸다(삿 15:4-5).
아가서 2:15에서는 "우리를 위하여 여우 곧 포도원을 허는 작은 여우를 잡으라 우리의 포도원에 꽃이 피었음이니라"고 노래한다. 술람미 여인은 왕과의 사랑을 위해서 작은 여우를 잡기를 바라고 있다. 여우는 종종 포도원 등지에 굴을 파고 서식하면서 봄촐 포도나무에 싹이 돋고 꽃이 필 무렵 포도원을 돌아 다니면서 포도나무를 갈아 먹거나 헤친다. 여기서는 영적으로 성도를 대적하는 사단의 방해를 의미한다. 에스겔 13:4에서는 자기 마음대로 예언하는 선지자들을 가리켜 여우 같다고 했다. 예수님은 마태복음 8:20, 눅 9:58 "예수께서 이르시되 여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 거처가 있으되 오직 인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다 하시더라"고 했다. 비유적으로 누가복음 13:32에서 헤롯을 지칭하여 '야우'로 표현했다.
