Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 2:1~7 - To the Church in Ephesus, perseverance but you have forsaken your first love
Revelation 2:4 – Yet I hold this against you, you have forsaken your first love
<Revelation> 2:4 - Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love (NIV); Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. (KJV)
○ In <Revelation> 2:2~3, Jesus have praised, but <Revelation> 2:4 is not a praise but a rebuke. Jesus have rebuked, saying, “You have forsaken your first love”.
○ As I already mentioned in <Bible Matrix ⑦_146>, we will be able to find external and internal factors for why they have forsaken their first love.
(1) External factors - Due to persecutions of the Roman Empire such as: in AD 68, the Apostle Paul was beheaded in Rome at the age of 64 during the reign of Nero (reign AD 37~68), in AD 70, the city of Jerusalem and the temple of Jerusalem were completely destroyed, and in AD 80, Timothy was stoned by the mob and martyred, and the Apostle John was exiled to the island of Patmos in AD 95, therefore, the purity, the passion, and the first love had cooled down.
(2) Internal factors - It was not long after Christianity appeared, so the doctrine was not clearly established, and in addition, as soon as the apostles were absent, such as the martyrdom of Paul and Timothy, and the exile of John to the island of Patmos, false doctrines such as various heresies (Heretic Theologies) and the Nicolaitans (Nicholaism) of 'spirit-body dualism’ and false apostles flooded in like waves. Therefore, the church in Ephesus needed a clear head to test them and discern the false doctrines and the false apostles. As a result, they did not tolerate the wicked, false doctrines and false apostles, but the mistrust prevailed between Christians due to the fight between doctrines, and this disbelief resulted in cooling of mutual love between Christians.
○ All humans are like this. As the apostles who saw and heard Jesus Christ died, they forgot their first love as time went by. Therefore, when you see the sign of the end of the age (Matthew 24:3) and when birth pains begin (Matthew 24:8), most of us forget Jesus Christ. So, Jesus says, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold….” (Matthew 24:12~13).
