How to Earn and Use Frequent Flyer Miles
In 2023, we know that regular flying probably isn't something that environmentalists would be encouraging.
But if you know you'll have to travel by plane a lot for work, or you have some trips planned, you might like to find out a bit more about the perks of frequent flyer programs.
If you're completely new to the idea, it just means getting points for using an airline, as you might do with a loyalty card in other situations. In this case, more expensive journeys, as well as longer ones, will get you more "miles."
You can use these miles to get things like cheaper tickets, free tickets, better seats and more luggage allowance.
Some airlines also give their most frequent flyers, or those who have earned a lot of miles, benefits like priority check-in and boarding.
And for those frequent flyers who want to relax at the airport, some programs offer their members access to airport lounges if they've earned enough miles.
To begin collecting miles, you need to sign up to an airline's loyalty program. You can also earn points by buying products, meals or hotel stays with some credit cards.
Many airlines work in groups, for example, Air Canada, ANA and Lufthansa are all part of the Star Alliance group, and if you get points by booking with one airline in a group, they can usually also be used with another one in that same group.
Getting points when booking with price comparison websites like Expedia is possible but it isn't as easy — it may be more simple to book directly with the airline you want.
And when you get those points, don't keep them for too long, advises the culture website Thrillist, because companies sometimes change their rules, so use those points while you can!
