POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Piazza della Libertà (Castel Gandolfo), Sunday, 20 July 2025

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Today’s liturgy invites us to reflect on the hospitality shown by Abraham and his wife Sarah, and later by the sisters Martha and Mary, who were friends of Jesus (cf. Gen 18:1-10; Lk 10:38-42). Every time we are invited to the Lord’s Supper and share in the Eucharistic meal, it is God himself who “comes to serve us” (cf. Lk 12:37). Yet God first knew what it was to be a guest, and today as well, he stands at our door and knocks (cf. Rev 3:20). In Italian, the same word can mean both “guest” and “host.” On this summer Sunday, let us reflect on this interplay of giving and receiving hospitality, for without it our lives are impoverished.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 오늘 전례에 나오는 손님접대 즉 아브라함과 그의 아내 사라, 그리고 후에 예수님의 친구인 마르타와 마리아 자매가 보여준 환대에 대해 살펴봅시다. (창세 18,1-10; 루카 10,38-42 참조) 우리가 주님의 만찬에 초대를 받고 성체성사에 참여할 때마다 “우리의 시중을 드시는” 분은 바로 하느님이십니다. 그러나 우리 하느님께서는 먼저 손님이 되는 법을 아셨고, 오늘도 우리의 문 앞에 멈춰 서시어 문을 두드리고 계십니다. (묵시 3,20 참조) 이탈리아어에는 같은 단어가 “손님”을 뜻하고 “주인”을 뜻하기도 합니다. 이 여름의 주일에 환대를 주고받는 이 상호작용에 대해 생각해봅시다. 이 상호적인 환대가 없다면 우리의 삶은 빈곤할 것입니다.

Humility is needed to offer hospitality, but also to receive it. It also takes courtesy, attentiveness and openness. In the Gospel, Martha risks missing out on some of the joy of this exchange. She is so caught up in preparing to welcome Jesus that she nearly spoils a unique moment of encounter. Martha is a generous person, but our Lord calls her to something more than generosity alone. He calls her to leave her preparations behind and to come and spend time with him.

겸손은 환대를 베풀기 위해서 필요하지만, 환대를 받기 위해서도 필요합니다. 또한 접대하는 이나 접대 받는 이 모두 예의, 세심함, 열린 마음이 필요합니다. 복음에서 마르타는 이러한 교류의 기쁨을 온전히 느끼지 못할 위험을 감수합니다. 그녀는 예수님을 맞이할 준비에 너무 몰두한 나머지 특별한 만남의 순간을 놓칠 뻔했습니다. 마르타는 관대한 사람이지만, 우리 주님께서는 그녀에게 관대함 자체보다 더 중요한 것을 일깨워주십니다. 주님께서는 그녀에게 준비하는 것을 놔두고 와서 당신과 함께 시간을 보내라고 부르십니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, our lives can only flourish if we learn to be open to something greater than ourselves, something that brings us happiness and fulfillment. Martha complains that her sister has left her alone to serve (cf. v. 40), but Mary is completely caught up in Jesus’ words. She is no less practical than her sister, nor less generous, but she recognized what was most important. That is why Jesus chides Martha. She was missing an opportunity to share in a moment that would have brought her great joy (cf. vv. 41-42).

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 우리 삶이 꽃을 피울 수 있습니다. 우리가 우리 자신보다 더 위대한 것에, 그리고 우리에게 행복과 충만함을 가져다주는 것에 마음을 여는 것을 알면 우리의 삶이 활짝 필 것입니다. 마르타는 동생이 자신만 시중들게 놔뒀다고 불평하지만, (40절 참조) 그 순간 마리아는 예수님의 말씀에 온전히 몰입하여 있습니다. 마리아는 언니 못지않게 현실적이고 관대한 사람입니다만, 무엇이 가장 중요한지 인식하고 있었습니다. 바로 이것이 예수님께서 마르타에게 타이르신 까닭입니다. 마르타가 자신에게도 큰 기쁨을 안겨줄 순간을 놓치고 있었기 때문입니다. The summer season can help us learn how to slow down and become more like Mary than Martha. Sometimes we too fail to choose the better part. We need to take time to rest and try to learn better the art of hospitality. The holiday industry wants to sell us all sorts of “experiences,” but perhaps not the ones we are really looking for. Every genuine encounter is free; it cannot be bought, whether it is an encounter with God, with others or with nature. We need only learn the art of hospitality, which includes both welcoming others and allowing ourselves to be welcomed. We have much to receive, not only to give. Abraham and Sarah, despite their advanced years, found themselves being parents after they welcomed the Lord himself in the three visitors. We too have so much life ahead of us, remaining to be welcomed and embraced.

여름철이 우리를 도울 수 있습니다. 속도를 늦추고 마르타보다 마리아에 가깝게 되는 것을 배우는데 적절한 계절이기 때문입니다. 우리도 종종 더 나은 것을 선택하지 못합니다. 시간을 내서 휴식도 취하고 환대의 기술을 더 배울 필요가 있습니다. 휴가 산업은 우리에게 온갖 종류의 "경험"을 팔고 싶어 하지만, 우리가 원하는 경험이 아닐지도 모릅니다. 모든 진정한 만남은 공짜입니다. 하느님과의 만남이든, 다른 사람들 또는 자연과의 만남을 돈으로 살 수 없으니까요. 우리는 다만 환대의 기술을 배워야 하는데 그 기술은 다른 사람을 환영하는 법과 우리 자신을 환영받도록 맡기는 법 모두를 포함합니다. 우리에게는 줄 것뿐만 아니라 받을 것도 많습니다. 노인인 아브라함과 사라는 세 손님으로 오신 주님을 환대한 후에 자신들도 아이를 갖게 됐다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 우리도 여전히 맞이하고 껴안아야 할 삶이 많이 남아 있습니다.

Let us pray to Mary Most Holy, our Mother, who welcomed our Lord, bore him in her womb, and together with Joseph gave him a home. In her, we see the beauty of our own vocation, the vocation of the Church, to be a home open to all and in this way to welcome her Lord, who knocks at our door and asks our permission to enter.

우리 주님을 맞이하시고, 잉태하시고, 요셉 성인과 함께 그분께 안식처를 마련해 주신 지극히 거룩하신 우리의 어머니 성모님께 기도합시다. 그분에게서 우리는 우리 자신의 성소와 교회의 성소의 아름다움을 봅니다. 교회는 모든 사람들에게 열려있는 집이며, 우리의 문을 두드리고 기다리시는 주님을 맞이합니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, This morning I celebrated the Eucharist in the Cathedral of Albano. It was a significant moment of ecclesial communion and encounter with the diocesan community. I thank His Excellency Bishop Viva who is present here and all those who worked to organise this beautiful celebration. I offer my best wishes to the entire diocesan community!

Tragic news continues to arrive in these days from the Middle East, especially from Gaza.

최근에 중동지역, 특히 가자지구로부터 비극적인 소식이 계속 들어오고 있습니다.

I express my profound sadness regarding last Thursday’s attack by the Israeli army on the Catholic Parish of the Holy Family in Gaza City, which as you know killed three Christians and gravely wounded others. I pray for the victims, Saad Issa Kostandi Salameh, Foumia Issa Latif Ayyad, Najwa Ibrahim Latif Abu Daoud, and I am particularly close to their families and to all the parishioners. Sadly, this act adds to the continuous military attacks against the civilian population and places of worship in Gaza.

지난 목요일 이스라엘군이 가자지구 성가족 가톨릭 본당을 공격하여 세 명의 기독교인이 사망하고 여러 명이 중상을 입은 것에 대해 깊은 슬픔을 표합니다. 희생자들인 사드 이사 코스탄디 살라메, 푸미아 이사 라티프 아야드, 나즈와 이브라힘 라티프 아부 다우드를 위해 기도하며, 특히 유가족과 모든 본당 신자들과 마음으로 함께 합니다. 안타깝게도 이러한 행위는 가자지구의 민간인과 예배 장소에 대해 계속되는 군사 공격에 영향을 미치고 있습니다.

I again call for an immediate halt to the barbarism of the war and for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

야만적인 전쟁을 즉각 중단하고 분쟁을 평화적으로 해결할 것을 재차 촉구합니다.

I renew my appeal to the international community to observe humanitarian law and to respect the obligation to protect civilians, as well as the prohibition of collective punishment, the indiscriminate use of force and the forced displacement of the population.

국제 사회에 인도주의 법을 준수하고 민간인 보호 의무를 존중하며, 집단적 처벌, 무차별적 인 무력행사, 강제 이주를 금지할 것을 호소합니다.

To our beloved Middle Eastern Christians I say: I deeply sympathise with your feeling that you can do little in the face of this grave situation. You are in the heart of the Pope and of the whole Church. Thank you for your witness of faith. May the Virgin Mary, woman of the Levant, dawn of the new Sun that has risen in history, protect you always and accompany the world towards the dawn of peace.

사랑하는 중동의 그리스도인 여러분께 말씀드립니다. 이 심각한 상황에서 여러분이 할 수 있는 일이 거의 없다는 여러분의 심정에 깊이 공감합니다. 교황과 온 교회는 마음으로 여러분과 함께 있습니다. 여러분의 신앙의 증거에 감사드립니다. 역사 속에 떠오르는 새로운 태양의 새벽, 레반트의 여인이신 동정 마리아께서 여러분을 항상 보호하시고 평화의 새벽을 향해 세상과 동행해 주시길 빕니다.

I greet the young participants of the pilgrimage organised by the Catholic Worldview Fellowship, who are visiting Rome after several weeks of prayer and formation.

I thank the International Forum of Catholic Action for promoting the “Prayer Marathon for Leaders”: the invitation, addressed to each one of us, is to pause today between 10 am to 10 pm to pray for just one minute, asking the Lord to enlighten our leaders and inspire in them projects for peace.

저는 “정부 지도자들을 위한 기도 마라톤”을 홍보해 준 국제 가톨릭 행동 국제 포럼에 감사드립니다. 이 포럼은 오늘 오전 10시부터 오후 10시까지 잠깐 멈춰 1분 동안 기도하며, 주님께서 우리 지도자들을 깨우쳐 주시고, 평화를 위한 그들의 프로젝트에 영감을 주시도록 주님께 청하도록 우리 각자를 초대합니다.

In these weeks, some families of the Focolare movement are in Loppiano for the “International School of New Families.” I pray that this experience of spirituality and fraternity will make you firm in the faith and joyful in the spiritual accompaniment of other families.

I greet the students, teachers and staff of the Catholic Institute of Technology, which has its headquarters here in Castel Gandolfo. I greet the Agesci Gela 3 Scout Group, engaged in the Jubilee pilgrimage that will end before the tomb of Blessed Carlo Acutis. I also greet the young people of Castello di Godego, who are engaged in a service experience with Caritas of Rome, and I greet the faithful of Palermo and those of Sarsina. Also present are the members of the folkloristic group “O Stazzo,” as well as the musical band of Alba de Tormes.
