The expression "Woe to you" is used to express sorrow and lament over the Pharisees, who are facing God's judgment.
Outwardly, they speak of God's justice and love, but in reality, they have none of God's justice and love. They are filled only with greed and malice; everything is for themselves. They do anything to fulfill their own desires.
They are rebuked for boasting about paying tithes while neglecting more important matters. Jesus also points out that they enjoy receiving greetings of piety from others.
This message applies to us as well. We take pleasure in being recognized and greeted by people. We are like whitewashed tombs, causing others to be defiled through us.
Let us observe this season with a living faith, not a dead one.
