(Today’s Devotional Column (October 4)) :
Let Go of “Self” and Gain Christ
“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.”
— Philippians 3:8 (NIV)
There is a part of us that is not easily willing to let go. It is the “self”—what I think is right, what I want, my desire to be recognized, my pride, and my own plans. When God tells us, “Let this go,” “Go this way,” or “Do this,” our lower self does not always respond obediently. Instead, we often become frustrated, complain, or resist.
Oswald Chambers points directly to this struggle:
“The ‘me’ of the lower self always gets angry when God says, ‘Do this.’ Let the ‘me’ completely wither under the wrath of the Lord.”
The depth of our faith is not determined by how much we possess, but by what we consider most valuable.
Paul looks back on his life and makes an astonishing confession. He considers the things that once seemed profitable to him as loss for the sake of Christ. He even says that he has lost everything and considers it garbage so that he may gain Christ.
Why?
Because “the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” is greater than anything else.
This does not mean that material things or the circumstances of life are evil in themselves. Rather, Paul is saying that nothing he once considered valuable can take the place of Christ.
When we truly come to know Christ, our values begin to change. Things that once seemed extremely important no longer have absolute value. Human approval, worldly success, personal achievements, and even our own plans cannot come before Christ.
First Corinthians 1:2 describes believers as those who are “sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people.” Our identity is not ultimately determined by what we have accomplished. It is grounded in the fact that we have been called and set apart in Christ Jesus.
Therefore, when God touches the “self” within us today, let us not become angry too quickly. If God is asking us to let something go, He may not be trying to take something precious away from us. Rather, He may be leading us to gain Christ more deeply.
When we let go of what we have been holding onto, we begin to see more clearly—not who we are, but who Christ is.
Let us pray:
“Lord, help me to let go of the ‘self’ I have been holding onto. Teach me to consider the knowledge of Christ more precious than anything else. Let my pride, desires, and self-centered plans wither away, and help me live with the joy of gaining Christ. Amen.”
Today’s Reflection
What am I valuing more than Christ today, and how am I responding when God asks me to let it go?
Today’s Key Thought
“The more I let go of ‘self,’ the more precious Christ becomes; and the more I gain Christ, the smaller the things I once boasted about become.”
