개혁신당 이준석 대표가 26일 당대표직에서 사퇴했다.

이 대표는 이날 국회 기자회견에서 “6·3 지방선거 이후 석 달 남짓, 저는 당의 자강과 쇄신을 위한 고민과 제안을 해왔지만, 당 안에서 충분한 호응을 얻지 못했다”면서 이같이 밝혔다.

이 대표는 “누구의 탓도 아니다”라며 “설득해 내지 못한 책임은 전적으로 대표인 저에게 있다”고 했다.

이어 “우리 앞에는 미룰 수 없는 정치 일정이 놓여 있다. 정치의 시간은 누구를 기다려 주지 않는다”며 “방향에 대한 합의 없이 그 일정을 맞을 수는 없다고 판단했다”고 했다.

이 대표는 “제가 오히려 당내 다른 구성원들이 하고자 하는 일을 가로막고 있었다면, 그 자리를 비우는 것이 제가 당을 위해 선택해야 할 길이라고 생각했다”고 했다.

그러면서 “한 사람의 당원으로, 동탄2신도시의 국회의원으로 제자리에서 할 일을 하겠다”며 “뒤이어 당을 이끌어 갈 분들께는 더 큰 힘을 실어 주시기를 부탁드린다”고 했다.

개혁신당은 이날 “개혁신당 지도부(당대표, 최고위원 및 정책위의장)는 지방선거 패배 등에 대한 책임을 지고 총사퇴했다”며 “천하람 원내대표가 당대표 권한대행을 맡아 차기 지도부 선출을 위한 전당대회 실시 등을 할 예정”이라고 했다.
