In today's passage, the vineyard keeper can be seen as symbolizing either Jesus, church leaders, or Israel's prophets. The owner represents God the Father, Jesus who judges us, and the fig tree symbolizes us.
The barren fig tree represents both Israel and the fruitless seven churches in Revelation. Living by faith is our mission and the greatest fruit we can bear. Jesus preached the gospel for three years, but there were no fruits to be found.
We are fruitless, despite having read, heard, and lived by God's grace - Jesus is being patient with us. The time given to us is an opportunity for salvation. If we waste this time, we will weep bitterly and gnash our teeth forever.
