Finding Free Kindle Books
Part 1: Introduction
Heavy readers out there know how easy it is for the cost of books to get out of control. Some people even spend more on books per month than they do on groceries. And for what? Spending time with a good book is one of the best forms of entertainment there is, but your love of reading doesn’t have to clean out your wallet and leave you broke, especially if you use a Kindle for reading.
This little volume you’re looking at right now is the Quick & Dirty Guide to Finding Free Kindle Books. We’re talking no frills, no filler, just a straight list of resources that’ll give you access to enough free and legal books to keep you busy reading for as long as you want.
Let’s get right to it. I said this was no frills.
Part 2: BookSends.com
The first service on our list is BookSends, a high-quality newsletter that sends a daily email featuring Kindle books in the genres you want to hear about. We all know that in most cases ebook sales are temporary, often lasting no more than a day, and it helps to have an alert system like this letting you know exactly what you want so you don’t miss out.
Other significant aspects of this service worth mentioning are that they work with publishers big and small to bring you dramatic discounts on many A-list authors in a variety of genres. You’ll find New York Times and USA Today Bestsellers on a daily basis. There’s a daily free app as well in addition to the highly crated lists put together by an expert editorial staff.
The emails are always free to receive, and when you find a book you like it’s a snap to click on the link over to Amazon to make the download. Books are then automatically sent to your Kindle, removing any possible need to go through the trouble of transferring files around.

Part 3: Overdrive
People have been taking advantage of getting books from their public libraries for centuries, and that great resource is now available for Kindle owners looking for free ebooks too.
The main trick is where to go, and that’s Overdrive. There are a couple different portals to access the Overdrive library, but the best one was clearly search.overdrive.com. Once at the site, there are two ways to go about searching, by searching for the book you want or searching for your library.
I recommend searching for your library first and finding out what they have available, rather than just flat out searching for the book you want, because unless it’s in the library you’re a member of, it won’t do you very much good. Clicking on Library Search on the search.overdrive.com main page, you can put in the name of your library or find it on the map. There are a ton of libraries! And although I doubt every library is a part of this, you’ve got a good shot at finding yours or one near you. Mine was there, and I didn’t even know they had ebooks available.
An obvious downside that can happen with any library is if the book you’re looking for is already checked out. There may also be a significant wait list as well. But still, for free, it doesn’t hurt to try, and depending on the book it may be worth the wait.

Part 4: Project Gutenberg
Long a resource for those looking to read cheaply, Project Gutenberg is the Internet’s repository for all of the public domain books you could want. That’s about 45,000 to be exact that can be downloaded at the drop of a hat. All you need to do is search for it via the bar on the left-hand side.
Whether you’re a fan of Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, etc. having access to a complete collection of the classics is worth its weight in gold. You’ll be able to get as many as you want completely free right here.

Part 5: Manybooks.net
With about 30,000 ebooks available, Manybooks.net lives up to its name for free ebooks. Many are also in the public domain, but you’ll find some newer ones as well. A fun feature of this site is that you can find out what the most popular titles are according to volume of downloads each week. They also make some recommendations and carry books in a variety of languages. Definitely worth checking out.

Part 6: OpenLibrary
OpenLibrary.org is a new one to me but looks very promising, especially with the catchy title of having one million ebooks available. It seems like I’m not the first one to find it, considering it also gets millions of visitors a month and gives you a number of reading options. There are newer titles to borrow and even some that you can read right on their website.
Once you’ve created an account, you’ll be allowed to borrow up to 5 titles for 2 weeks each. For Kindle readers, the best option for you will be to download titles in PDF format rather than ePub, then transfer the file onto your device to read. You can keep track of what you have out and what you’re reading in your account area. Overall, I’d say there’s more flexibility here than Overdrive, but if they don’t have the title available to read they direct you to purchase it from stores.

Part 7: Internet Archive
One last site I’ll tell you about is Archive.org, which has a huge catalog of not only books but a lot of academic documents and papers as well. If there’s a subject you’re interested in learning about, you’re sure to find some quality information here. In addition to the books, there’s a library for videos and music, plus forums for discussions.

Bonus: Librivox
Audiobooks can be tough to come by, especially if you’re looking for free ones, but Librivox may be the best place to get them quickly. Plus, if you’re particularly inspired by a book you’re looking for, you could even try recording it yourself and adding it to their collection!
Conclusion
I hope you found this Quick & Dirty list of free Kindle book resources useful. With any luck you’ve already gotten your hands on a few titles that you’re dying to read and have saved some money in the process. I’ll let you get to it then. Thanks for reading!
