Mutsu produces yellow gold and Iwami produces white silver. The Harima copper is blood red and the Buzen iron is as white as driven snow. The Satsuma's sword is unsurpassed in sharpness and the grain of Chikuzen's rice is glossy enough to distinguish it from other rices. The cotton cloth(fabric) from Hizen is silky and smooth and the paper from Meinong is clean and tough.
The ink stone from Akamagaseki could be comparable with that skill from Duanxi and its superiority of the Kyoto's ink stick seems to be as good as Li Tinggui [of China] in workmanship. The Heian's writing brush is delicate and the Sugihara sake is sweety in flavor. The timber from Sagami is equally fine as camphor tree and the horse from Kai can run as swift as fleet horse [of running a thousand miles a day]. In regard to local products in Japan, I have already mentioned above. Furthermore, I don't know them firsthand. Therefore, as there is no need for me to account them one by one, and so for the moment, I leave the question open ended.
Iron is generally tempered hundreds of times(many times). Therefore, in manufacturing weapons, the sharpness is beyond question. Even after just slightly wiping dust off a weapon, it can not be distinguished from the snow. The weapon catched people's eyes in a glance and shoot a light at people.
The transplantation of ordinary rice into paddy field originated in Japan. It means that the Japanese rice was the best in the world. Moreover, recently they could make it possible to maximize the benefits of land through sophistication of tools and farmer's diligency. They also took over and irrigated the whole vast track of Ainu land under the rule of Matsumae daunch. Therefore, it is said that the benefits are more then ten thousand times than before.
It is impossible to list in detail all kinds of cotton and silk. However, in the case of red silk, I saw such a exquisite fabric for the first time during the trip. So called "片錦譜" that I saw in a museum and the house of former daimyo(lord) of Tsushima, (it is a scrapbook of pictures and writings made with the pieces of various silk cloth), is use on all items patterned or plain. Therefore, it cannot be inputted from weaving factory of Jiangnan(江南) and [Sichuan](西蜀/四川) in China.
In the purity of Japanese paper, it is comparable with that of Tang(唐), and in the toughness, it is comparable with ours. This is the merit of the paper. In addition, recently a kind of western paper is also widely used in this country[Japan]. This paper is so smooth and shiny that it can dazzle the eyes, and it is as thick as a palm. However, it appears to be a paper, but it cannot be a paper, so there is no reason to be regarded as a very valuable thing. In my opinion, this paper is inferior to the best quality paper of Japan.
The ink stone from Akamagaseki doesn't look like a high quality goods due to overly smooth surface.
In the case of brush and ink, they all follow the style of Tang. It is not their own custom. In recent years, they also often use western style writing tool[fountain pen] to draw lines and write words on paper. They just use it all day long without dipping in ink, but I don't know the way how it was made.
The horses are all fast and strong, so they are usable. The cattle are so big that they seem to be capable of carrying burdens twice as much as Korean cattle. However. their meat is not sweet and not tender, so it falls short of Korean beef for cooking.
The tree is loft and straight, so it is usable. but a broad and thick stone is rare. I suppose that, as there are all earthy mountains, no rocky cliff(mountain), the stones they can collect from that mountains are like that(as such).
Coppers, in the case of being white, it is called white copper. Our country has nothing like that. Therefore, we usually import it from Beijing and use them. Now when it comes to Japanese cooper, it seems to be superior to chinese one in luster. In the case of lacquer ware, it can be said Japanese are the best in the world.
In olden days, Japanese porcelain(ceramic) was not parallel to the China in painting on the porcelain, but it these days is considered delicate and outstanding after adopting Western method. In the museum, there is a flower vase of porcelain. Its height looks as high as reaching to the ceiling and its body is encircled with painting: it dazzles people's eyes with mixed gold and blue, which is no trace of blurring. It is also made by imitating Western method(skill). Western people consider it surpassing the original after seeing the porcelain. It is said that this is advanced by Satsuma(薩摩) domain. In the case of conventional color as well as celadon, every kiln produces respective color.
As to mirror, they used a black lacquered hand mirror in former times, but we cannot see it anymore(they do not use it anymore). In the case of seated mirror(mirror box) and attached mirror, they follow Western style. Only copper mirror still retain traditional style. In the case of glasses, its frame is also made of lacquered wood. folding the linking frame between glass lenses, both lenses are overlapped each other. Then, it has pointed top and rounded bottom. Putted it in a lacquered case, it looks like a calabash. However, now there are no such glasses anymore(that kind of glasses came into disuse): there are just those having small lenses which can barely cover the eyes; they have no lens frame; or some frame is made of silver or copper with the slender arms like crane legs. Both ends of the slender arms are bent down. So, after they are hooked on to the ears, the glasses are tightly fixed and not easily taken off. These frame and the arms are all as slender as thread. Does It also probably follow the Western style?
As to cotton cloth, especially the product from Settsu(攝津), it is also said that there is no place in which products do not sell these days. When it comes to weaving, since they all follow Western method, the Japanese cotton cloth looks identical with so-called 'Western cotton cloth'.
As to tea, the green tea was their original products. Nevertheless, it is rarely seen in here. In growing tea for gaining profits, the profits are all the same with that case of China(Beijing). Tea is usually regarded as a valuable product by westerners, so the profits of tea are double than ever before.
Domieo(Sea bream) is popularly known as "Tai(鯛)" in Japan: it can be found all places and all times.
Gangodeungeo(Salt mackerel) is also produced in Japan(is also product produced in Japan). The tasty is light, good enough to eat.
Northen sea(北海) produce a fish named Meongtae(pollack, 明太): It is also called Bugeo(北魚), meaning a fish produced in the north sea. When this fish is alive, even it moves around lively and briskly in the water, but it is not worth of Huizi(惠子)'s enjoyment. When the fish died, even it turns into a tasty dish, but it is not worth of the valuable(rare) food enjoyed by noble family's taste. Moreover, the price is low because the fish abound. Therefore, there is no one who don't know Bugeo in our country, even including people who live in the secluded village, old people, women and children. But now, when looking the display of fishes on the museum [in Japan], I could not find only this fish, Bugeo. They(Japanese) also said that only this fish is not in the museum.
In the case of palm tree, there are not only trees are several feet in length but trees are full armful in size in Japan. There is no place which do not have this tree.(It can be found all places in Japan.) Sometimes, the trees form a luxuriant forest on the mountain. Therefore, in the case of ladder built along a cliff and bridge crossing valleys, there is no exception that they all are made of these trees, showing that how common this tree is in Japan.
In the case of cycads, it is called '蘇鐵' because this tree come to rife when iron nails are driven(inserted) into this dead tree. Therefore, We Korean saw it and felt foreign. Accordingly, it was frequently found in the book of exotic account written by envoy. However, people of this country do not count this tree as a rarity.
When it comes to bamboos, no matter what it is, large or small, there is no place do not have this tree in Japan.
In species of flower plant, it is common that there are many flowers that we don't have, there is no that nothing we have. Flower bed amid thin forests can be adorable. However, I don't know the names of them at all. When it comes to the flowers like royal azalea, azalea, and Satsuki azalea, we Korean regarded just a pot(plant) of that flower as worthy of thousand pieces of gold. However, In Japan, there are no places without that flowers on the banks of a stream and the rocks. In the old saying, there were no golden orioles in Japan in the past. However, I can see it in this present trip, and their song in the forest is sonorous and beautiful to hear.
In the case of ginseng, even they sometimes try culturing them, but it is said that this is generally unfit for their soil.
In the case of candle, it is as white and smooth as it is similar with our candle made of white wax, but it is better than ours in purity. this is made of sap extracted from a tree, but I don't know the tree's name.
