There was music from my neighbor’s house through the summer nights. In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars. At high tide in the afternoon I watched his guests diving from the tower of his raft or taking the sun on the hot sand of his beach while his two motor-boats slit the waters of the Sound, drawing aquaplanes over cataracts of foam. On week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city, between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains. And on Mondays eight servants including an extra gardener toiled all day with mops and scrubbing-brushes and hammers and garden-shears, repairing the ravages of the night before.

girls : 2장에서 머틀의 여동생 캐서린이 이 파티에 참석한 적이 있다는 언급이 있었으므로 파티에 온 손님들 가운데 캐서린과 같은 여자들도 있었다는 것을 독자는 짐작할 수 있다. 여자는 조금 어리거나 젊은 층이 있었을 것으로 추측된다.

like moths : 나방은 밤의 등불빛 속에서 현란한 색을 발한다. 여기 모인 사람들이 우아하고 순결한 아름다움을 가지거나 추구하는 이들이 아니라는 것을 알게 해준다.

among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars : 청각, 미각, 시각.

moths – bug : 여기에 모인 사람들은 나방, 그들을 실어 나르는 왜건은 벌레에 비유되고 있다.

Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New York–every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulpless halves. There was a machine in the kitchen which could extract the juice of two hundred oranges in half an hour, if a little button was pressed two hundred times by a butler’s thumb.

At least once a fortnight a corps of caterers came down with several hundred feet of canvas and enough colored lights to make a Christmas tree of Gatsby’s enormous garden. On buffet tables, garnished with glistening hors-d’oeuvre, spiced baked hams crowded against salads of harlequin designs and pastry pigs and turkeys bewitched to a dark gold. In the main hall a bar with a real brass rail was set up, and stocked with gins and liquors and with cordials so long forgotten that most of his female guests were too young to know one from another.

cordial : 코디얼. 과일 주스로 만들어 물을 타 마시는 단 음료 / liqueur : 리큐어. 달고 과일 향이 나기도 하는 독한 술. 보통 식후에 아주 작은 잔으로 마심.

그 당시 금주법으로 어린 애들은 코디얼주의 종류에 대해 잘 알지 못한다는 뜻

By seven o’clock the orchestra has arrived–no thin five-piece affair but a whole pit full of oboes and trombones and saxophones and viols and cornets and piccolos and low and high drums. The last swimmers have come in from the beach now and are dressing upstairs; the cars from New York are parked five deep in the drive, and already the halls and salons and verandas are gaudy with primary colors and hair shorn in strange new ways and shawls beyond the dreams of Castile. The bar is in full swing and floating rounds of cocktails permeate the garden outside until the air is alive with chatter and laughter and casual innuendo and introductions forgotten on the spot and enthusiastic meetings between women who never knew each other’s names.

이 단락부터 다음 단락의 ‘a cheerful word’까지(44:13-31) 저자가 표시를 해놓고 여백에 ‘College Humor’라고 써 놓았다.

3장 처음부터 이 단락 앞에까지는 과거시제로 서술하다가 이 단락 다음 단락은 현재시제로 서술한다. 현장의 모습을 좀 더 생생하게 전달해주기 위한 기법으로 보인다.

pit : orchestra pit : (무대 바로 앞쪽 아래 부분의) 오케스트라석

pit full : 초고에는 pit full로 되어 있고 초판에는 pitful로 되어 있다. 피츠제럴드가 이 오탈자를 발견하지 못하고 수정하지 못한 것으로 보인다.

viol : 비올(바이올린과 비슷한 초기 현악기)

cornet : 코넷(작은 트럼펫같이 생긴 금관 악기)

deep : (앞뒤로 늘어선 줄이) ~줄인

five deep in the drive : 개츠비 저택의 진입로에 다섯 줄로 주차를 해 놓을 정도로 길이 넓다는 것과 차를 타고 온 부자들이 많다는 뜻이기도 하다.

shorn : 초판에 bobbed(단발머리로 자른), 저자 수정본에 shorn

1920년 5월에 발표한 단편소설의 제목이 Bernice Bobs Her Hair(버니스 단발머리로 자르다)이다. 이 작품은 소위 재즈시대와 미국 모더니즘을 보여주는 작품으로 알려져 있다. 이 작품에서 버니스가 단발머리로 자른 모습이 보기 흉하게 묘사되어 있으므로 그런 연상을 하게 될 것으로 생각한 것이 아닐까.

여기서 카스티야 왕국이 언급되는 것은 카스티야(Castilla)라는 이름은 성채(Castillo)에서 유래했다는 사실에 유의한 것으로 보인다. 개츠비의 저택이 성채(castillo)와 같음을 암시하는 것으로 보인다.

shawls beyond the dreams of Castile : In the text, Fitzgerald alludes to the Kingdom of Castile, a kingdom from the Middle Ages located in today’s Spain. This Kingdom is known for its power, and Fitzgerald connected it to one of Gatsby’s famous parties. For example, Fitzgerald writes, “shawls beyond the dreams of Castile”. This means that some party-goers’ attire is elegant and extravagant like the kingdom of Castile. This shows that Gatsby’s party-goers are very elite and their superior clothing makes them appear like the elitists of the Castile Kingdom. Fitzgerald describes the shawls as beyond Castile’s dreams, implying that these party-goers are even better than the people of Castile because of their wealth and what their wealth can buy. 카스티야 : 1065년부터 1230년까지 중세 시대 이베리아 반도에 존재했던 왕국이다. 카스티야(Castilla)라는 이름은 성채(Castillo)에서 유래했다. 처음에는 9세기에 레온 왕국 동쪽의 카스티야 백작령으로 탄생했지만 서기 1065년에 카스티야 왕국으로 독립하게 되었다. 1230년부터 1516년까지 이베리아 반도에 존재했던 왕국. 명목상으로는 1715년까지 존재했다. 훗날 아라곤 왕국과 결혼으로 동맹을 맺은후 레콩키스타를 마무리 짓고 스페인 왕국을 형성한다.

in full swing : 한창 진행중인, 무르익은

The lights grow brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music and the opera of voices pitches a key higher. Laughter is easier, minute by minute, spilled with prodigality, tipped out at a cheerful word. The groups change more swiftly, swell with new arrivals, dissolve and form in the same breath–already there are wanderers, confident girls who weave here and there among the stouter and more stable, become for a sharp, joyous moment the center of a group and then excited with triumph glide on through the seachange of faces and voices and color under the constantly changing light.

the earth lurches away from the sun : 지구가 휘청거리면서 태양이 사라진다. 해가 지는 것을 이렇게 표현했다. 인공의 불빛이 지구를 태양으로부터 멀어지게 하고 있다는 인상을 준다. 태양으로부터 멀어지면서 인간이 사는 지구가 휘청거리고 위험으로 향하는 모습을 연상케 한다. 태양이 없으면 어둠의 세계인데 어둠의 세계를 인공의 빛으로 밝히면서 우주의 질서가 아닌 인간 세상의 질서가 지배하는 새로운 세계가 펼쳐지고 있다.

yellow cocktail music : 톰과 머틀의 아파트 꼭대기 층의 창문을 yellow windows(40:6)라고 하면서 human secrecy를 감추고 있는 곳이라고 했다. 개츠비의 저택에서 연주되는 음악이 yellow라고 해서 톰과 머틀의 아파트와 같이 모종의 비밀을 간직하고 있는 듯한 인상을 준다.

The lights grow brighter - Laughter is easier : 태양이 사라지고 인공의 빛이 커지면서 농담도 더 쉬워진다.

prodigality : 신약성경 누가복음 15장에 나오는 ‘탕자의 비유’에서 탕자(prodigal son)를 연상케 한다.

minute by minute, spilled with prodigality, tipped out at a cheerful word : prodigality를 spill하다가 금세(minute by minute) prodigality이 아니라 cheerful word가 쏟아낸다(tipped out). 방탕이 곧 잊혀지고 유쾌한 농담만이 남아 있게 된다.

tipped out – swell with new arrivals : 비워지고 다시 채워지는 인상을 준다. 소비하고 다시 채워지는 이 과정은 자본주의의 소비의 은유로 읽힌다. 부풀어오른다는 swell이라는 단어는 미국의 1929년의 대공황을 예고하는 듯하다.

the stouter and more stable : 경제적으로 안정되고 자본이 흔들림이 없을 듯한 사람들을 가리키는 것으로 읽힌다.

이 단락에서 비교급의 사용이 눈에 띈다: brighter, higher, easier, more swiftly, stouter, mor stable. 분위기가 점점 고조되는 것을 효과적으로 전해주고 있다.

Suddenly one of these gypsies in trembling opal, seizes a cocktail out of the air, dumps it down for courage and moving her hands like Frisco dances out alone on the canvas platform. A momentary hush; the orchestra leader varies his rhythm obligingly for her and there is a burst of chatter as the erroneous news goes around that she is Gilda Gray’s understudy from the “Follies.” The party has begun.

gypsies : 파티에 참석한 여자들이 실제로 집시는 아니지만 wanderers(45:2)이므로 집시라고 한 것이다.

in trembling opal: 떨리는 오팔 색을 한. * 입고 있는 오팔 색의 옷이 춤추는 몸과 함께 가볍게 흔들리는[떨리는] 것을 표현하고 있다. (신현욱, p.108)

Frisco: Joe Frisco (1889~1958) : 보드빌(vaudeville) 코미디언이자 재즈 댄서로 유명하다. 중산모를 쓰고 커다란 시가 담배를 피워 문 채 춤추는 게 장기이다. 1919년에 브로드웨이에 데뷔, 1920-30년대에는 보드빌 공연을 주로 했다.

Gilda Gray : 길다 그레이(1901~1959). 길다 그레이는 몸통은 그대로 둔 채 어깨를 흔드는 동작이 특징인 춤인 '시미'(shimmy)라는 이름을 처음 만들어 낸 사람으로 알려져 있기도 하다. 폴란드 이주민인 그녀가 자신의 댄싱 스타일에 대한 질문에 묵직한 악센트로 '시미'[슈미즈, chemise(속치마)의 그녀식 발음]를 흔든다고 답변한 데서 유래했다고 한다. Follies : 「지그펠드 시사 풍자극(Ziegfeld Follies)」을 가리킨다. 이 극은 1907년에 플로렌즈 지그펠드(Florenz Ziegfeld)에 의해 제작되어 1936년까지 거의 해마다 공연된 브로드웨이의 쇼였다. 1920년대는 당시의 유명 할리우드 스타들이 이 무대에 주연으로 등장했는데, 길다 그레이 역시 특별 출연자였다.

The party has begun : 집시들, 즉흥적인 무대 춤, 헛소문으로 인한 잡담의 폭발 등이 파티의 시작을 알리고 있다. 이런 것들이 이 파티의 구성요소라는 것이다. 이 파티가 어떤 파티인지 단적으로 말해주고 있다.
