The book of Changes, Volume 1.(I Ching, First Part)
3.水雷屯(수뢰준) Hexagram 3 :
Water over Thunder(Zhun-Difficulty at the Beginning).
◎ Zhun represents a difficult time when trying to bring forth nnew life.
In otherr words, it signifies a situation facing hardships during the early stages
of founding a nation or establishing a business.
and it reveals the strstegies for survival in such times.
Additionally, the Zhun hexagram represents future power.
Although it refers to someone destined to ascend the throne in the future,
for now, they are like a crown prince enduring immense hardships.
▣ Zhun: Supreme success comes through perseverance.
Do not act lightly or move forward hastily;
it is advantageous to establish feudal lords(appoint helpers).
[Explanation]
Zhun brings great success and prosperity, so maintaining righteousness will be beneficial.
Do not rush forward even if you have a destination in mind;
instead, establishing helperss and leaders will prove advantageous.
[Commentary]
The Treatise on the Sequence of the Hexagrams(Xugua Zhuan) explains "Zhun" as follows :
"After heaven and earth came into being, all creation began to fill the universe,
and Zhun was the very first to emetge among them."
Zhun refers to the primordial chaos off the universe―a time of cosmic turbulence, chaos,
and the darkest hours right before the dawn.
It is humans who were born by receiving the initial vital energy between heaven and earth;
among them, Zhun signifies the birth of the first son, Zhen(震,진- ☳),
and the second son, Kun(坎,감 - ☵), through their parents' energy.
When thunder and lightning strike, rain falls and water forms,
causing all living creatures to rush forth into existence.
However, the birth of all life inevitably undergoes hardship upon hardship.
The Zhun hexagram is considered one of the Four Inauspicious Hexagrams,
alongside Kan(坎,감), Jian(蹇,건), and Kun(困,곤).
Meanwhile, Zhu Xi noted : "The character(Zhun) depicts a sprout(屮,초)
that has just broken through the ground(一,일),
but has not yet fully uncurled and spread."
Dasan stated : "It describes a state like a hooked shoot unable to uncurl smoothly ―
full of difficulties and discomfort.
Even the character for spring(春,춘) is derived from Zhun(屯,준)."
Perhaps for this reason, Confucius also advises in the Tuan Zhuan(Commentary on the Decision) :
"In times of trial, one must always walk alongside parents and teachers," expiaining as follows :
"Zhun is a time when the firm(Yang) and yielding(Yin) first interact,
giving birth to new life with great difficulty.
Because precious life in the world must push through a harsh environment,
its birth is naturally arduous.
However, when thunder and rain come together and all creatures grow and develop,
bringing harmony into completion, it will lead to great prosperity.
If that is not yet possible, it is natural to wait for right time.
Though confusion and darkness dominate right now, do not rush out of anxiety;
it is beneficial to appoint and entrust capable leaders to support the world.
In times of adversity, one must walk with wise parents and teachers,"
In the difficult and dark times of the world's creation,
one must seek guidance from wise parents and teachers.
Acting arbitrarily on one's own will ultimately lead to trouble and unease.
Commentary on the lmages(Xiang Zhuan) :
Zhun―the firm and yielding first interact, and life arises through difficulty.
Movement occurs in thee midst of dangre, leading to great success and perseverance.
The movement of thunder and rain fills the realm.
Cosmic creation is in its chaotic, dark origin;
it is fitting to appoint lords, yet peace has not yet settled.
(Phonetic reeading of the classical text above)
No matter how difficult the world may be,
if one strives solely to achieve meritorious deeds, success can be obtained.
However, if many compete for that merit, the world's chaos will only deepen.
Even if I do not step forward right now, there are many who wish to do so;
thus, one should find a righteous lord to act in their place.
When all creation emerges, it must await thunder and rain.
When thunder and rain first arise, the world is chaotic and its reasons unclear,
but once the sky clears, the true merit becomes evident.
Moreover, though Heaven creates all things, how could it craft every single detail?
Though a sage saves the people. how could they rescuee eevery individual on their own?
(Just as Heaven shares its duty with a mother),
a noble person establishes capable lords and delegates responsibilities to them.
Yet, this is certainly not an easy or comfortable path,
Even after establishing lords, difficult tasks remain difficult.
If one who appointts a sovereign receives the Zhun hexagram, it is auspicious;
however, for someone setting out on a conquest or jouurney, it portends ill fortune.
The Miscellaneous Notes on the Hexagrams(Zaquan) states :
"The Zhun hexagram does not manifest outwardly, yet it does not lose its proper place."
Therefore, during the time of Zhun, one should not step to the forefront.
Instead, it is advantageous to put forward an experienced mentor or a Professional CEO
who can navigate troubled times.
Furthermore, one must assess their own strenghts and weaknesses in advance,
place the right talent in the right positions, work steadfastly, and chart a plan toward success.
In the Annals the Joseon Dynasty, King Seojo's poem titled Zhun Heng Shi
(Poem on the Prosperity of Zhun) appears.
