1830년 11월 27일 파리에서 일어난 것으로, 우리의 복되신 성모님께서 성 뱅상 드뽈(St. Vincent De Paul)에있는 사랑의 자매회의 한 수녀인 성녀 카타리나 라부레에게 발현하신 사건이다. 상아빛 흰 비단옷을 입고 계신 성모님께서는 지구 모양의 작은 구(球)를 딛고 계셨으며, 양손을 내려뜨리고 계셨는데, 귀한 보석으로 꾸며진 그 손에선 빛 줄기가 딛고 계신 그 구(球)를 향해 뻗쳐 흐르고 있었다.

성모님께서 설명하시길, '이 구(球)는 전 세계 특히 프랑스와 각 개인의 영혼을 나타내는 것'이며, 눈부신 빛 줄기는 「나에게 구하는 이들에게 부어줄 은총을 상징하는 것」이라고 하셨다. 이 발현 중에 타원형과 같은 후광이 복되신 성모님을 둘러싸기 시작했는데, 그 위부분에는 『오! 원죄 없이 잉태되신 마리아여, 당신께 호소하는 우리를위하여 빌으소서!』란 글이 적혀 있었다. 그 때, 그 수녀는 이런 이야기를 들을 수 있었다. 「지금 이 모양대로 메달을 만들어라. 이 메달을 지니는 이 마다, 특히 목에다 걸고 다니는 이는 은총을 받을 것이며, 굳은 믿음을 갖고그렇게 하는 이에겐 더 한층 풍부한 은총을 받을 것이다. 」라는 이야기가 끝나는가 싶더니, 곧 그 메달의 다른쪽면이 보이기 시작했는데, 그 면에는 M자가 적혀 있었고, 가로놓인 막대기 위에는 십자가가 놓여 있었다. 그 아래에는 두 개의 심장이 있었는데, 하나는 가시로 둘러싸여 있었으며(예수성심), 다른 하나는 날카로운 칼에 찔려 있었다. (마리아 성심), 그리고 12개의 별들이 이 모든 형상을 둘러싸고 있었다.

그러면 이 모든 것의 의미는 무엇인가? 이는 성모님이 누리신 특은에서 잘 나타나는 것처럼, 그 여인은 바로 성모님 당신인 것이다. 성모님은 모든 죄와 허물에서 벗어난 오묘하고 아름다운 여인으로서, 이를 상기하기 위하여 그분은 상아빛 흰옷을 입고 계시며, 『원죄없이 잉태하신 마리아』로 불리게 되는 것이다. 또한 성모님은 인류의 어머니로서 우리를 위하여 하느님의 온갖 은총을 지니고 계신다.

성모님 손에서 흘러나오는 눈부신 빛줄기는 이것을 상징하는 것이다. 발아래 지구를 딛고 계신 성모님은 세상의여왕이라는 것을 상징적으로 가리키는 것이다. 메달 뒷면은 M자는 마리아(Maria)를 나타내는 것이며, 그 위에 십자가가 있음은, 바로 예수님의 십자가를 통해서 성모님의 위대한 신비가 나옴을 가리키는 것이다.

이들 두 개의 성심 중 하나는 예수님의 것이고 다른 하나는 성모님의 것으로써, 그 두분 사이의 깊은 일치와 닮음을 가리키는 것이다. 즉 그 성심은 골고타의 희생 안에서 서로 밀접히 일치해 있는 것이다. 12개의 별은 복되신 성모님의 성덕과 12사도와, 특별히 성모님을 여왕으로 모신 수많은 성인들이 받게 된 영광의 왕관을 상징하는 것이다.

우리는 이 메달에서 성모님의 신심의 내용을 살펴 보았다. 원죄 없으신 성모님의 잉태와 전 인류의 어머니로서의마리아는 인류를 보살피신다는 사실과, 이 지상의 여왕이 되심을 보았다. 이 사건은 위대한 루르드 발현을 위하여, 여러 점에서 미리 마련하신 것이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 많은 어려움을 겪고난 뒤, 드디어 메달이 만들어져서전 세계에 보급되었으며, 너무나 많은 기적과 은총이 이 메달을 통하여 이루어졌으므로 사람들은 자연히 이 메달을 기적의 메달이라고 부르기 시작했던 것이다.
