<오늘의 기도>
Today's Devotional (10.5) : Not My Will, But God's Will
Every day, we face countless moments when we must choose between our own will and God's will.
Sometimes, even when we pray, we may actually be asking God to accomplish what we want rather than seeking what He wants.
At the deepest level of sin is the desire to make ourselves the master of our own lives. Oswald Chambers describes this tendency as the desire to say, in effect, “I am my own god.”
So what do we need today?
We need to look at Jesus in Gethsemane.
Facing the suffering of the cross, Jesus fell to the ground and prayed:
“He went a little farther and fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.”
Mark 14:35
Jesus did not hide His desire to escape the suffering. Yet He did not insist on His own will. He surrendered Himself to the will of the Father.
So let us pause before God's Word today and ask:
“Who is truly the Lord of my life?”
Sin is not merely immoral behavior or evil actions.
At the deeper root of sin is the desire to say, “I want to be the master of my own life.” It is the desire to place ourselves at the center and to think, judge, and decide according to our own will rather than submitting to God.
Romans 5:12 teaches that sin entered the world through one man, and through sin came death. Sin is therefore connected with humanity's turning away from God and placing itself at the center.
Therefore, the most important question of faith is not simply,
“What have I done wrong?”
but rather,
“Who is the Lord of my life?”
In Gethsemane, Jesus gives us the most beautiful answer.
Facing the suffering of the cross, Jesus honestly brought His anguish before the Father. Yet He did not place His own will above the Father's will. His prayer expressed His genuine pain while ultimately surrendering Himself to the Father's purpose.
This is true obedience.
A self-centered person prays, “God, please accomplish what I want.”
But a person who trusts God prays, “Lord, let Your will be done rather than mine.”
We often want God to bless our plans. But faith is not asking God simply to accomplish our plans. Faith is surrendering even our plans before the will of God.
Through Adam's disobedience, sin and death entered the world. But Christ walked the path of obedience. Romans 5 contrasts the disobedience of one man with the obedience of Jesus Christ.
Therefore, our prayer today should become more than,
“Lord, please let things happen the way I want.”
Instead, let us pray:
“Lord, whatever I desire, never let me place my will above Yours.”
When we lay down our desire to make ourselves our own god, we finally acknowledge God as God.
And then we discover something beautiful:
Surrendering my will does not mean losing myself. It means discovering my true self within the will of God.
Today, let us give the throne of our lives back to God.
<Today's Prayer>
Heavenly Father,
I confess that there are times when I trust myself more than I trust You,
and when I place my own will above Your will.
Forgive me for the times when I have claimed to trust You
while simply asking You to accomplish what I wanted.
Help me look to Jesus praying in Gethsemane,
and teach me the obedience of the One who chose the Father's will even in the face of suffering.
May this confession become my prayer today:
“Not my will, but Your will be done.”
Keep me from trying to become the master of my own life.
Be the true Lord of my life.
Help me lay down my thoughts, plans, and desires before You,
and teach me to live according to Your will today.
In Jesus' name, I pray.
Amen.
