제가 대학 입시를 치르던 학력고사 시절에는 필기시험 외에 ‘체력장’ 점수도 중요했습니다. 이 체력장 시험에는 100m 달리기, 공던지기, 제자리멀리뛰기, 윗몬 일으키기, 오래달리기 그리고 턱걸이(여자는 오래 매달리기)가 있었습니다. 그런데 턱걸이 1개도 못 하는 친구들이 꽤 있었습니다. 1점이라도 더 얻어야 하는 현실에서1개의 턱걸이조차 안 되는 친구들은 매우 낙심했습니다.

고등학교 3학년이 되자, 체육 선생님은 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다. “턱걸이를 1게도 못하는 사람은 오늘부터 쉬는 시간, 점심시간마다 철봉으로 나와라. 그리고 할 수 있을 때까지 철봉에 매달려라. 턱걸이를 못해도 좋다. 무조건 철봉에 매달려 있어라.” 고등학교 2학년 때까지 턱걸이를 1개도 못했던 제 친구는 그 체육 선생임 말대로 했습니다. 비가 오는 날에도 매달렸습니다. 그러자 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다. 그 친구가 턱걸이를 하게 된 것입니다. 결국 그는 체력장 시험에서 20개의 턱걸이를 해서 만점을 맞았습니다.

입시를 위해서 필사적으로 노력하는 것과 달리, 영혼이 죽고 사는 문제가 달린 전도에 대해서는 이런 노력을 안 하는 경우가 많습니다. 한 영혼을 진정으로 사랑한다면 이런 열정으로 매달려 기도하고 복음을 전해 보십시오. 그러면 변하지 않을 사람이 결코 없을 것입니다._하은
