Not My Will, but the Father’s Will
“He said, ‘Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.’”
— Mark 14:36
Facing the cross, Jesus came before God and called Him, “Abba, Father.” He did not hide His agony. He honestly prayed, “Take this cup from me.” Yet He concluded His prayer with complete surrender: “Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
Here we see the profound meaning of redemption.
Oswald Chambers explains that redemption is not merely being rescued from the consequences of sin. Redemption means that we can be delivered from the inherited tendency toward sin and, through Jesus Christ, receive a pure new life—the life of the Holy Spirit.
Sin leaves within us a tendency to put ourselves before God. We naturally want our own will rather than God’s will, and we often hold on to our own plans more tightly than God’s purposes. But the redemption of Christ does more than free us from the power of sin. It changes the center of our lives.
In Galatians 1:16, Paul says that God was pleased “to reveal his Son in me.” God does not merely make Christ known to us; He desires that Christ be revealed in us. And when Christ is revealed in us, our will is gradually brought under the will of God.
This is what Jesus demonstrated in Gethsemane. “This is what I desire, but I want the Father’s will to be done.” This is the path of the redeemed.
To be saved does not simply mean that our sins have been forgiven. It also means that the life of Christ begins to be revealed in us, so that we increasingly value God’s will above our own and choose obedience to His Word over our own plans.
Today, may our prayers contain more than, “Lord, please make this happen.” May they also contain the confession, “Not my will, but the Father’s will be done.”
The grace of redemption does not leave us bound to our past sins. Christ is revealed in us, and our lives are transformed into instruments through which God’s will can be accomplished.
What am I holding on to today more tightly than God’s will?
Lord, help me lay down my own will and allow Christ to be revealed in me. May my life become a vessel through which not my will, but the Father’s will, is accomplished.
