Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 2:1~7 - To the Church in Ephesus, perseverance but you have forsaken your first love
Revelation 2:6 – You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate
<Revelation> 2:6 - But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.(NIV); But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.(KJV); But this is in your favor: You hate the evil deeds of the Nicolaitans, just as I do.(New Living Translation)
○ If you look at <Revelation> 2:6, you can guess what the heresy (Heretic Theology) was that particularly harassed the church in Ephesus and its Christians. It is the practices or evil deeds of the Nicolaitans.
○ Pls read about Nicolaitans: Nicolaitans (Nicholaism) is a heretical theology or paganism that advocated ‘Spirit-body dualism’ as a challenge to Christianity in Greece and Rome in the 1st and 2nd centuries. Only the spirit is good and the object of salvation, and the body is an evil that will die and useless and has nothing to do with salvation. So they said that they could do anything with their bodies, and they justified carnal hedonism and pursued lustful lives.
○ Pls read about no-morality and no-law: They said, “once they believed in God, no matter what they did, it was not a sin”, so they practiced fornication or immorality based on no-morality and no-law that rejected morality and law. Because of the grace of Jesus, morality is not necessary, and because the prophets and the law ended with John the Baptist (Matthew 11:13), there is no need to keep the law, and once saved, the effect is eternal, so it is okay to commit another sin. So, those who were deceived by their words committed adultery and fornication and became corrupted and evil. In particular, highly educated people were seduced by their words.
○ The Nicolaitans is a heretical theology derived from Gnosticism. Gnosticism denies that Christ came in the flesh and was resurrected in the flesh by insisting on the spiritual and physical dualism that the body is evil as nothing and the spirit is good as eternal. But we know that whoever denies that Christ has come in the flesh is the antichrist (1 John 4:1~6, 2 John 1:7).
○ And some of the early Church Fathers, including Irenaeus (c.AD 140~c.202), who was the first church father of the Roman Catholic Church and the father of the theology and ecclesiology, mentioned that Nicolaitans were those who accepted the ideas of Nicolas, the seventh of the seven deacons of the early church at Jerusalem (Acts 6:5), however, nowhere in the bible can I find the basis for that. You make the decision on that.
