Cotton is a biennial or triennial plant cultivated in many parts of the world, in the U.S. principally in the southern states. The round, hairy, branching stem grows from a spindle-shaped root and bears hoary, palmate leaves with five pointd lobes. The flowers have five yellow petals, each with a purple spot near the bottom. The fruit is a three- or five-celled capsule, eash cell containing a seed buried in cottom fiber.

Seed; mucilaginous. A fluid extract or a decoction made from the bark of the root was once used as a substitute for ergot to promote menstruation, to induce uterine contractions during childbirth, and to effect abortion. The seeds have been used as a soothing remedy for coughs.
