While the Northwest Division-leading Denver Nuggets stood pat at the trading deadline, the Chicago Bulls tried to help their playoff chances with two deals to bring back familiar faces.
While they wait for all of their new arrivals, the Bulls will try Friday night at home to cool off the Nuggets, who are searching for a fourth straight win on their season-high eight-game road trip.
Before Thursday's deadline, Chicago(24-30) acquired Tim Thomas and seldom-used reserves Jerome James and Anthony Roberson from New York for Larry Hughes.
The Bulls, who sit ninth in the Eastern Conference and 1 1/2 games behind eighth-place Milwaukee, also picked up Brad Miller and John Salmons from Sacramento on Wednesday in exchange for Andres Nocioni, Drew Gooden and little-used reserves Cedric Simmons and Michael Ruffin.
Thomas was on the Bulls' roster to start the 2005-06 season, but played in only three games before getting sent home in December and waived in March. Since his brief stint in Chicago, the veteran forward has averaged 11.1 points with Phoenix, the Los Angeles Clippers and Knicks.
Miller played 105 games with the Bulls from 2000-2002, until they traded him to Indiana in a seven-player deal. The 11-year veteran center hasn't played since Jan. 30 because of a hip injury, but has averaged 11.9 points and 8.0 rebounds when healthy.
"I'm definitely excited for the opportunity to go home and go to a team that I've already played for," said Miller, an Indiana native. "I have a lot of friends and family back there. The Bulls are right on the verge of getting into the playoffs, and winning is something very important to me right now."
The most important acquisition might be Salmons, who was the Kings' second-leading scorer this season while averaging a career-best 18.3 points and shooting 41.8 percent from 3-point range. After acquiring Salmons, Chicago traded Thabo Sefolosha to Oklahoma City in exchange for a first-round pick in this June's draft.
Playing short-handed on Wednesday night, the Bulls won 113-104 in Milwaukee behind a season-high 31 points from Kirk Hinrich, who was rumored to be headed to Minnesota.
"Kirk got hot, and he was really the difference," said Chicago coach Vinny Del Negro, whose team has won six of its last nine games. "Just a good, gutsy win for us."
While Chicago enters the weekend just outside the top eight in the East, the Nuggets own the second-best record in the West and have thrived on their eight-game trip, which ends Sunday against the Bucks.
Denver(37-17) moved to 5-1 on the swing with a 101-89 comeback win Wednesday night in Philadelphia. In their first game following a six-day layoff, the Nuggets trailed by 16 in the first half, but Chauncey Billups scored 17 of his 22 points in the third quarter.
Billups and Carmelo Anthony, who finished with a team-leading 26 points and 14 rebounds, combined to shoot 8 of 15 in the third.
"With a team like ours, we can make that up," Billups said of the early deficit. "We've got too many shooters."
Since returning from a fractured right hand on Jan. 30, Anthony has averaged 24.8 points. He averaged 21.1 in his first 31 games.
Anthony and Billups each had 21 points in Denver's 114-101 home win over the Bulls on Nov. 23, when Kenyon Martin made all 10 of his field-goal attempts and led the Nuggets with 26 points. Chicago's Ben Gordon led all scorers with 28.
These teams have split each of their last four season series, alternating wins and losses in each meeting during that span.
