Today's passage highlights the fact that while salt is salt, there is salt that has lost its taste. The same applies to the holy people of God—there are holy people of God who have lost their 'taste.' Likewise, there are churches that have lost their 'taste,' even though they are still churches.
This was the case with the Jews during Jesus' time. They believed in God, but they had lost the 'taste' of truly believing in God. They were the ones who killed Jesus.
'It (salt) is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; so it is thrown out.' To be 'salty' as holy people of God, there must be total obedience.
Only when we let go of everything we have—whether it be money, desires, or ambitions—can we become disciples of Jesus. That is how we can have the saltiness. The reason we fail to win people over is that we have lost our saltiness.
Our Lord Jesus was the salt. He died for us and made us into salt. The Word is the salt. In the Old Testament, it was called the covenant of salt. This Word is what makes us into salt. Therefore, we must accept the Word and respond with actions of faith that the Word demands."
