With the new Bundesliga season days away, Schalke left-back Christian Pander has a good reason to perform well this year- Real Madrid are after him.

This coming season looks set to be the most important of his career. After straining knee ligaments over two years ago, it has taken the player 19 months to return to full fitness.
Reports from Germany claim that Real Madrid are monitoring the attacking full back’s progress. Sporting director Pedrag Mijatovic watched Pander before and after the injury and could possibly be looking to recruit the 24 year old for the 2008/2009 season.
New Real trainer Bernd Schuster has already commented on the lack of a left full-back at the club after the departure of Roberto Carlos.
Pander himself is reluctant to comment on the speculation. “For me my health is more important than anything. After my long injury I want to concentrate on Schalke” he explained.
“I trust my advisor Alen Augustincic. He will carry out any discussions, but for now I want to enjoy the Bundesliga.”
He added, “At some time I would like to make such a step. Not just for the money, but to develop personally. An experience abroad is very important for that.”
