We have discussed numerous kinds of stories and tropes in theater in this course. As we have seen, stories of doomed lovers and unrequited love are usually very popular. Today, we will discuss Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Aida.
The story of Aida takes place in ancient Egypt. Interestingly, the opera was both commissioned and originally performed in Cairo. The following year, it premiered in Milan, Italy. It received immediate acclaim and has endured lasting popularity ever since. The main plot of Aida focuses on two lovers, a captured Ethiopian princess and the captain of the Egyptian guard. The captain develops forbidden feelings for the prisoner and rejects an Egyptian princess who has fallen in love with him. This forms the quintessential love triangle that is common in many romantic dramas. Aida enjoyed enormous success at both its European premiere and its Egyptian opening. The costumes and sets were particularly impressive at the time. Aida’s success has continued into the modern age. It has been adapted into plays, musicals, and other forms of art. Many of the themes in Aida, such as unrequited love and betrayal, are still present in modern stories. For tonight’s homework assignment, I would like you to select a modern drama and compare it to Aida in terms of theme and plot.
