Moore's new film generates buzz at Cannes
Michael Moore, who won the top prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival for Fahrenheit 9/11, is causing a stir once again with his new documentary, Sicko. Investigations by the U.S. Treasury Department into a trip Moore took to Cuba have made headlines, further increasing publicity for the film. Sicko is focused on what Moore believes to be the failings of the U.S. health care system. It is not to follow in Fahrenheit 9/11's Palm d'Or- winning footsteps, however, as it is entered in the festival as a non-competitor.

Alarming spike in personal bankruptcies
The recent high levels of consumer and corporate spending this year have been contrasted by the alarming number of personal bankruptcies. In the first quarter of 2007, bankruptcies filed by individuals reached 45,057, up from 17, 679 last year, reported the Supreme Court. Analysts attribute the surge primarily to more and more people applying to debt rescheduling programs run by the government and private financial agencies. Other factors involved are shortages of new jobs and stagnant incomes.
Despite these startling figures, private research institutes project increases in economic growth and domestic spending this year. Furthermore, the national index measuring consumer confidence surpassed the benchmark for the first time since April 2006.

Link found between apples and asthma in pregnancy
A University of Aberdeen study on the eating habits of pregnant women has suggested an apple a day may keep asthma away. Children of mothers in the study who ate four or more apples a week were half as likely to develop asthma as children whose mothers ate one apple or less. The project polled 2000 pregnant women on their eating habits, and tracked the health of the children over the following five years. Apples are linked to better lung health in adults, possibly for their antioxidant properties
The researchers in the study acknowledge that the link may not be a direct relationship, and that other factors in women's lifestyles may have affected the outcome. They also say that the project's results show the importance of a balanced diet during pregnancy.
