The problem presented in the passage is not about the temple itself but about the people working in it. This is the greatest issue. The problems of Roman colonization, Israel’s economy, or Herod are not the true issues. The real problem is that the chief priests, scribes, and elders are corrupt. They do not acknowledge their wrongdoing, and when confronted with their faults, they become even more corrupt, filled with hypocrisy and deceit. They have stolen the temple for themselves.
This also means we should not fill the church with worldly things. The Word we hear and the Word in our hearts belong to God. Therefore, it is right for us to dedicate ourselves to God.
What we owe to the world, such as taxes, should be paid. But God’s image and inscription belong to God. This means dedicating the church to God and dedicating ourselves to Him.
Moreover, this world reflects God’s image in small ways. Everything bears God’s form and image. Thus, the money and taxes we give to the world are very small in comparison. So pay your taxes and dues faithfully.
What is important is dedicating the church—marked by God’s image and inscription—and ourselves to God. When Jesus returns, He will take what belongs to God.
