In the passage, both the scribes who study the Scriptures professionally and the common people only understood the Christ as a descendant of David. This shows that simply reading the Bible does not guarantee understanding who Jesus is. No matter how much someone reads the Bible, they cannot recognize Jesus as the Christ unless God reveals it to them.
It is entirely by God’s grace that we believe Jesus is the Christ, are saved, and become children of God—not because of how much we know about the Bible.
We must continually and carefully examine the Scriptures, as Jesus did, to understand who He is and how God has revealed Him through the Bible. Realizing who Jesus truly is depends on how we approach the Scriptures. This realization calls us to be holy people of God who not only see the Messiah as someone who solves earthly problems but who also deeply understand and interpret how the Messiah was foretold in the Bible.
