What is the meaning of plating?

Plating is a finishing process in which a metal is deposited on a surface. Plating has been done for hundreds of years; it is also critical for modern technology.





도금(鍍金)은 어떤 물체의 표면 상태를 본 재료의 성질보다 더 유용하게 하기 위해 다른 물질을 해당 물체의 표면에 얇게 입히는 것을 말하며, 일반적으로는 금속 제품에 다른 금속 재료를 입히는 행위를 말한다.

즉 금속 표면에 다른 금속 성분의 박막을 입히는 행위.

일본어 발음은 멕키(鍍, めっき), 메끼

Ex) 메끼 입힌다

주로 부식을 막거나 표면의 광택을 위해서 도금을 한다.


도금

영어로는 plating이라고 한다. coating과는 어떤 차이가 있을까?

가끔은 같은 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

도금만 부를 때는 플레이팅이라고 하지만 외관 표시에는 Ni-Co라고 해서 니켈 코티드란 뜻으로 혼용해서 쓰고 있다.

The main differences between the two is that while coating simply adds a powder or chemical layer to the surface of a fastener, plating fuses the new material to the original material the fastener is made from.

The electroplating process is also more controllable, therefore can create a more uniformed thickness.
