The scribes appeared to pray to God for a long time, but they prayed to be seen by people as those who pray a lot. They devoured the estates of widows, whom God commanded to have compassion on and care for, yet outwardly they pretended to be holy by offering lengthy prayers. A genuine prayer to God cannot come from someone who exploits the lives of defenseless, impoverished widows.
The fact that they could ostentatiously pray while living such a life shows that they did not fear God. As a result, their prayers became hypocritical prayers, prayers that God would never hear.
True faith is revealed through our actions. Jesus teaches that faith leading to salvation must be demonstrated through our deeds. Actions intended to impress people are hypocrisy, and actions intended to impress God are faith.
