Revelation 2:8~11 – (1) Church in Smyrna - Background & Meaning of Christian Historical Perspective, AD 100~312, The Age of Persecution & Martyrdom
○ Summary - From the perspectives of Christian history, the historical background of the message to Smyrna is between AD 100 and 312. In other words, from AD 100, just after the Apostolic Church, until 313, when Constantine I the Great (reigned over AD 306~337) of the Roman Empire converted to Christianity in 312 and promulgated the Edict of Milan in 313, which legally authorized religious freedom for the first time, thus, during this time, the message prophesies the age of persecution of Christians by the Roman Empire would be severe and of subsequent martyrdom of Christians would come.
☞ Pls read ‘The situation of the time in AD 27 when Jesus was crucified on the cross’ - As I briefly mentioned in <Bible Matrix ⑦_66>, the historical situation in AD 27, when Jesus was crucified and died, is as follows:
(1) First of all, internally, there was the Supreme Legal Court of Jew as Sanhedrin, the supreme ruling and decision body of Judaism that opposed Jesus as Messiah and Christianity that followed the words and teachings of Jesus,
(2) Then, externally, Augustus (Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus or Octavianus, BC 27~AD 14), the first emperor of the Imperial Roman Empire (BC 27~AD 394), appointed Herod Antipas (reigned BC 4~AD 39) as the Tetrarch as the King of Galilee in BC 4, and the 2nd emperor, Tiberius (Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus, reigned AD 15~37) appointed Pontius Pilate (reign AD 26-36) as the 1st procurator (or prefect or governor) of Judea in AD 26.
☞ Pls read ‘The supreme legal court of Judaism as Sanhedrin‘ - Judaism's supreme council consisted of the high priest, the chief priests, the elders of the people, and the teachers of the law. And the number the council was about 71 including the head as the high priest. Priests were mainly Sadducees, and scribes were mainly Pharisees. They opposed Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah and the Son of God, and they opposed the resurrection of Jesus on the third day, and they also opposed the teachings of Jesus and the Christianity that followed His Way(or Christ’s Way; Acts 9:2). In the case of serious punishments such as the death penalty, they handed it over directly to Roman Empire in Rome or it was processed with the approval of the Jewish governor appointed by the Roman emperor.
☞ Pls read ‘The reason why Jesus died on the cross in AD 27 and the circumstances of the trial‘ – (1) The Jews such as the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, the elders, and the teachers of the law arrested Jesus and took Him to the Sanhedrin through Caiaphas, the high priest (Matthew 26:57~59, Luke 22:54~66). The reasons why the Jews arrested Jesus are: (a) Jesus broke the law of Moses by healing the sick on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1~14), and (b) Jesus said “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), which caused the Jews to think, “Jesus of Nazareth, a mere man, claims to be God, which blasphemes God” (John 10:31~39).
(2) Jesus answered to the question of the council, “I am the Christ, that is, the Messiah, the King, and the Son of God. And in the future, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the mighty God and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Matthew 26:63~64; Luke 22:67~70), so the council concluded that Jesus blasphemed God (Matthew 26:65, Luke 22:71). Therefore, early in the morning on Thursday, the high priest, all the chief priests and the elders of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death, they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor (Matthew 27:1; John 18:28) who had the authority to judge death or not (John 18:31). (The Jews handed Jesus over to the Gentiles)
(3) To Pilate's question, Jesus answered, "I am the king of the Jews," and Pilate announced to Sanhedrin and the crowd, "I found no basis for a charge against this man" (Luke 23:4, John 18:38), and after learning that Jesus was a Galilean, he sent Him to Herod Antipas (Luke 23:6~7).
(4) Herod Antipas asked many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer, so he sent Him back to Pilate (Luke 23:8~12). Pilate said three times that Jesus had no grounds for the death, but the Jews insistently demanded that He be crucified (Luke 23:13~25, John 19:6), and also the Jews cried out, "Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar“, so finally Pilate handed Jesus over to them to be crucified (John 19:12~16), so Jesus was crucified by the Roman soldiers at about 12:00 and died at about 3:00 p.m. (9:00 in Rome) on Thursday (Matthew 27:45~50, Luke 23:44~46). And Jesus was buried on Friday early morning and rose again three days later, that is, at dawn on the first day of the week as Sunday (Matthew 28:1, Luke 24:1, John 20:1).
