1973년 앨범 Brain Salad Surgery 투어 이후 emerson lake palmer는 공식 해체는 아니었지만 약 3년 정도 사실상 활동 공백기에 들어갔습니다(1974–1977). 이 기간 동안 멤버들은 완전히 쉬기보다는 각자 개인 프로젝트와 음악적 확장을 시도했어요.

정식 밴드는 만들지 않았지만 세션 연주, 연습, 개인 음악 연구에 집중했습니다.
드럼 테크닉을 더 발전시키고 장르 확장을 모색하던 시기였습니다.
훗날 슈퍼그룹 활동(아시아 등)으로 이어지는 기반을 쌓은 시기로 평가됩니다.

《Works Volume 1》은 영국의 프로그레시브 록 밴드 에머슨, 레이크 & 파머의 다섯 번째 스튜디오 앨범으로, 1977년 3월 25일 애틀랜틱 레코드에서 더블 앨범으로 발매되었습니다. 《Brain Salad Surgery》(1973) 발매 후 월드 투어를 마친 후, 밴드는 긴 휴식기를 거쳐 1976년 새 앨범 녹음을 위해 다시 모였습니다. 당시 세금 문제로 해외에 거주하던 멤버들은 런던과 스위스 몽트뢰, 프랑스 파리 등 해외에서 새 앨범 작업을 진행했습니다. 《Works Volume 1》은 각 멤버가 직접 작곡하고 편곡한 곡들이 수록된 면과, 멤버들이 함께 연주한 곡들이 수록된 면으로 구성되어 있습니다. 키스 에머슨은 피아노 협주곡 1번을, 그렉 레이크는 작사가 피터 신필드와 함께 여러 곡을, 칼 파머는 다양한 음악 스타일의 곡들을 녹음했습니다.

이 앨범은 영국 앨범 차트에서 9위, 미국 빌보드 200 차트에서 12위를 기록했으며, 양국에서 골드(50만 장 판매)를 달성했습니다. 에머슨이 1942년 아론 코플랜드의 곡을 편곡한 그룹 트랙 "Fanfare for the Common Man"은 1977년 5월 싱글로 발매되었다. 이 곡은 영국 싱글 차트에서 2위를 기록하며 밴드의 영국 내 최고 순위 싱글이 되었다. 1976년에 녹음된 추가 자료와 이전 스튜디오 세션의 곡들을 포함하여 Works Volume 2로 발매되었다. 두 앨범 모두 1977년에서 1978년까지 진행된 투어와 함께 홍보되었으며, 투어 초반 공연에서는 밴드가 오케스트라와 함께 무대에 올라 연주하는 모습을 보여주었다.

《Works Volume 2》는 에머슨, 레이크 & 파머의 여섯 번째 스튜디오 앨범으로, 1977년 11월 25일에 발매되었습니다. 솔로 트랙 3곡과 앙상블 트랙 1곡으로 구성되었던 《Works Volume 1》과는 달리, 《Works Volume 2》는 더 후의 《Odds & Sods》나 레드 제플린의 《Coda》처럼 다른 앨범 세션에서 남은 곡들을 모아 하나의 앨범으로 발매한 컴필레이션 앨범입니다. 앨범의 구성이 산만하다는 비판도 있었지만, 블루스, 블루그래스, 재즈 등 다양한 음악 장르를 아우르며 밴드의 새로운 면모를 보여준다는 평가도 있었습니다.

2017년에 리마스터링된 이 앨범은 에머슨, 레이크 & 파머의 콘서트 실황을 담은 확장판 《Works Live》가 추가되어 더블 CD로 발매되었습니다
