The only way to avoid falling into temptation is through prayer. In today’s passage, the command to pray means to pray with determination so as not to fall into temptation.
Jesus continued to deliver heavy messages, especially about His death and the end times. The disciples, rather than finding hope in His words, felt their weight, which left their hearts weary and caused them to fall asleep. Seeing this, Jesus urged them to rise and pray so they would not fall into temptation, especially the devil’s.
To avoid falling into the devil’s temptation, there is no other way but to pray. Christians who do not pray now will not be able to endure the tribulations that are to come—they will all fall into temptation.
For those who are praying now: pray even more. Pray earnestly, striving and laboring with all your might.
