(서울=연합뉴스) 황윤기 기자 = 이재명 대통령은 24일 볼로디미르 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령이 유엔 연설을 통해 우크라이나군에 생포된 북한군 포로 2명을 한국에 보냈다고 공개한 것에 대해 "무슨 사정이 있는지는 모르나 많이 아쉽다"고 비판했다.

이 대통령은 이날 엑스(X·옛 트위터)에 올린 글에서 "비공개 합의를 어기고 공개했다"면서 이같이 밝혔다.

이 대통령은 "북한 포로 국내 송환 문제는 외교, 안보, 한반도 정세에 크게 영향을 미치는 매우 예민한 의제"라며 "공개로 생길 여러 문제를 생각할 때 비공개하는 것이 모든 면에서 타당했고 그렇게 합의했다"고 밝혔다.

이 대통령은 또 보수 야권에서 정부가 북한 포로 송환 사실을 공개하지 않은 것에 대해 비판하는 것과 관련, "타당하고 정당한 비공개 조치를 비난하는 것은 옳지 않다"고 반박했다.

이어 "남북 관계가 어떻게 되든, 누군가 죽어 나가든, 국익이 손상되든 개의치 않고 성과를 생색내느라 포로 송환 사실을 징치고 춤추며 온 세상에 광고했을 그들 입장에서는 우리 정부의 비공개 노력이 이해가 안 될 뿐 아니라 심지어 '뭔가 문제 될 게 있나' 싶을 것"이라며 "이처럼 잔인하고 무책임할 수는 없다"고 강도 높게 비판했다.

이어 "국정 지지율 만회에 명백히 도움 될 북한 포로 국내 송환 사실을 공개하자는 내부 주장이 왜 없었겠느냐"며 "소소한 자신의 이익을 위해 누군가의 생명과 국익, 안보를 해치는 사람을 살인자나 매국노라 부른다"고 했다.

그러면서 "무수한 사람들이 죽거나 다치고 모든 것이 파괴되는 반인륜적 전쟁들이 조기에 종식되기를 간절하게 기원한다"고 강조했다.

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday expressed regret that Ukraine has disclosed the transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war (POWs) to South Korea, calling it a breach of a non-disclosure agreement.

The South Korean president made the remarks in a post on his X account, a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine recently sent the two North Korean soldiers to South Korea in his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
​
Later in the day, the Ukrainian presidential office said the transfer of the two North Korean prisoners to South Korea was carried out through direct dialogue with Seoul.
​
"(Ukraine) disclosed the transfer in breach of a non-disclosure agreement," Lee wrote. "I don't know the reasons (for the disclosure), but I regret it."
​
Lee said the issue is a very sensitive matter that could immensely affect diplomacy and national security, as well as the security environment on the Korean Peninsula, adding that South Korea and Ukraine had agreed to a confidential transfer of the North Korean soldiers, in consideration of the many problems expected if the transfer were disclosed.

Lee also addressed opposition parties' criticism over the confidentiality agreement, saying it would be "cruel and irresponsible" to disclose the transfer regardless of how it would affect inter-Korean ties or whether it could lead to someone's death or hamper national interests.
​
The president expressed hope that inhumane wars, in which innocent people are killed or injured, would end as soon as possible.
​
The two North Korean soldiers were captured by Ukrainian forces in January 2025 after being deployed to Russia's Kursk region along with thousands of other North Korean troops in support of Moscow's war against Ukraine.
​
The two earlier expressed their desire to come to South Korea, and South Korea and Ukraine had since been discussing their transfer.
