Doesn’t it feel as though Jesus’ gaze toward Peter is also directed at us? Even when we deny Him like Peter did, Jesus still looks at us. What is the nature of Jesus’ gaze upon us? Although Peter denied Jesus, Jesus looked at him with love. Peter, upon meeting Jesus’ eyes, went outside and wept bitterly.
We must be able to feel Jesus’ gaze upon us. Even when we are cowardly and afraid, let us continue to follow Him. Peter followed Jesus, even to the high priest’s courtyard where He was taken. Perhaps it was because Peter followed that he was able to meet Jesus’ gaze—and weep bitterly in repentance.
