STORY 4. CORPORATE SPONSORS
(OC) Well, lobbying loopholes have been on full display this week with the Republicans here in
(VO) So, again, Brian Ross has been on "The Money Trail."
(VO) From the moment they arrived at the Twin Cities airport, Republicans have been reminded that this convention is being brought to them by corporate
I think it's very clear that those who give to the host committees, are getting the access and influence that they desire.
(VO) In addition to spending millions on lavish parties here, big corporations have put up $58 million for the Republican convention itself. They put up about the same for the Democrats in
It's really ironic, too, because this whole federal election campaign law was developed because in 1972, the Nixon administration had set up a slush fund through the 1972 Republican National Convention. We've gone in full circle.
(VO) Nine conventions after Nixon, many of the corporate sponsors still try to keep what they're doing from being seen by the press or the public. As at this gathering last night in
We have to have campaign finance reform and return the government to the people. And take it out of the hands of the special interests.
(VO) Yet, at his nomination convention this week, the big money donors are seated in the prime skyboxes, overlooking the proceedings below. A kind of Republican royalty, whose multimillion contributions to pay for this convention, do not have to be disclosed until close to the election.
(OC) As of the close of business tonight, the total from corporate

STORY 5. SAVING THE DOGS
(OC) It has been a year since NFL star Michael Vick admitted financing a vicious dog fighting operation. The pit bulls were trained to fight to the death. Dogs that didn't perform were drowned or shot. Well, Vick is in prison. But what happened to the dogs? They might have been put down. But instead, a court approved an effort to rehabilitate those dogs. An effort documented by National Geographic. And ABC's Ryan Owens has an early look.
(VO) They are the fighting dogs that many thought would have to be euthanized. Georgia, one of Michael Vick's champion pit bulls, with the scars to prove it. Her tail broken, her teeth yanked out so she couldn't bite the males she was forced to breed with.
No teeth, hmm? Good job.
Good boy, Cherry.
(VO) And Cherry, a so-called, bait dog, a weak opponent thrown into the ring with the most vicious fighters just to boost their confidence. They are 2 of the 54 pit bulls seized from Michael Vick's property last year. While he went to prison, most of his dogs came here, to an animal shelter in southern
They've had people do just unspeakable acts to them. And they still love people. They still look to us for guidance. For nearly a year, trainers worked with the dogs every day. Teaching them to walk on a leash. Giving them their first baths. Gradually helping them trust people again. Cherry, who once cowered in fear, now seems to enjoy his walks. He'll even play with another dog, another pit bull.
There's all those misconceptions that fighting dogs can never be with other dogs and they can't be rehabilitated. Look at these two. They love each other.
(VO) The scarred champion,
Okay,
(VO) And cuddles with stuffed animals. Remarkably, she may soon be someone's pet.
I definitely see her going into a home.
(VO) Nearly half of Vick's pit bulls have been adopted. That's not realistic for them all. But these dogs, bred to kill, are proving they can still fight. This time, for a better life. Ryan Owens, ABC News,
STORY 6. JOBS LOST
(OC) Well, now, more on today's surprisingly bleak unemployment report, with tens of thousands more jobs cut last month. The unemployment rate shot up in August to 6.1%.
(VO) That's the highest in five years. And increasingly, Americans are finding themselves out of work for longer stretches of time.
(OC) So, ABC's Betsy Stark is joining us with a look behind the numbers. Betsy, what's causing these numbers?
(OC) Well, Charlie, you know it's not just that more people are out of work, it's that more people are having a hard time finding a good job. A good paying job. A job that pays as well as the job they lost. One of the things we learned in today's report is that there are a record number of people who are working in part-time jobs because they cannot find full-time jobs. Which means there are a lot of people trying to get by on very meager incomes.
(OC) And the unemployed? All blue-collar workers? Or white-collar workers, as well? All economic strata, or just lower income people?
(OC) You know, that was another one of the disturbing things in today's report, is that the pain is spreading. It's not just blue-collar. It's professional workers, as well. It's black, white, young, old, male, female. We're seeing unemployment rise in all corners of the economy.
(OC) And very quickly, those who have their jobs, are wages keeping up with inflation?
(OC) Charlie, here's the math. Wages are going up about 3% a year. Inflation is rising at 5% a year. So, it's little wonder Americans feel like they're falling behind. They are.
(OC) All right. Betsy Stark, reporting on the unemployment numbers today.
