Mal Waldron: "The Quest"
June 27, 1961 at the studio Rudy Van Gelder in Inglewood Cliffs was recorded "The Quest" - an album by pianist and composer Mel Waldron, the same year released by the label "New Jazz".
This album was re-issued several times under the name of Eric Dolphy, but the last edition on CD returns the palm of leadership to its original owner - Waldron. The name, which can be translated as search, research, or simply a quest - which has already become a well-known word in Russian, perfectly describes the resulting material: the musicians play seven original compositions of the leader, and in a very interesting composition, which has new discoveries: besides the already mentioned Eric Dolphy, playing the viola and clarinet, the session includes tenor saxophonist Booker Erwin, the lively Charles Persip behind the drums, double bass player Joe Benjamin and - most notably - Ron Carter, whose cello game AET characteristic depth and "multi-dimensional" sound of the band. As the album describes Scott Yanou, "The Quest" is something balancing on the verge of hard-bop and avant-garde - and perfectly executed. I just want to add that this "something" is also very exciting: many compositions, such as the opening of "Status Seeking" or "Warm Canto", sound somehow "especially bold" and evolve as whole musical novels with interesting ones dramatic nuances.
