Nine children are diagnosed with a brain tumor everyday in this country. Brain tumors are the most deadly of all the childhood cancers. There is no cure for brain tumors at this time. Governmental funding for research is very limited. It is up to us as private individuals to save our children. A cure will be found with your help.

My mother has been on a variety of treatments for Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. First, they tried her on hormone targeted therapies, and then moved onto oral Xeloda. She's been having symptoms that she's embarrassed to talk about (though I always assure her that the body is nothing to be ashamed of). Maybe some of you have seen or experienced similar troubles... During her first bout of breast cancer, my mom's libido was completely non-existent, but now she's finding that despite feeling very ill, she's in a state of "hyper arousal."

STORY 7. PERSONS OF THE WEEK
(OC) Finally tonight, our "Persons of the Week." As we mentioned, the three, major networks are joining forces in a first-of-its-kind effort, in primetime, to raise awareness and money to fight cancer. "Stand up for Cancer" is at
I was testing positive for stage 4 metastatic melanoma.
I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.
Finally, they found out that I had multiple myeloma.
(VO) Terry Barter, Ellen Rigby and Jason Connolly have deadly cancers for which there is no cure. But advances in treatment have not only saved their lives, but are allowing them to live their lives fully.
Did you miss me?
Yeah.
(VO) When Jason's melanoma returned two years ago, no one thought he would survive.
When you're in that situation, you're faced with two choices. You can either deal with it and attack it. Or you can let it kill you.
(VO) He chose to attack, by opting for a toxic treatment called high dose interleukin-2. The treatment so lethal it has to be given in the intensive care unit of a hospital. After six months of self-described hell, his cancer was gone. And he's now promised his 4-year-old son, he'll be there for the boy's wedding.
When you make that transition between being sick and not being sick, it's like being on a train going 80 miles per hour, that all of a sudden stops. And you go flying off the train.
(VO) When Ellen found out she had breast cancer, it had already spread to her liver. But the type of cancer she has gives her doctors many treatment options.
The key with a metastatic disease is to manage the disease and balance the efficacy of a treatment with the quality of your life. The treatment can be very toxic.
(VO) The toxic treatment is, of course, chemotherapy, which Ellen has been taking on and off for six years. But right now, she's on hormone and targeted therapies with virtually no side effects.
I live a very full life. I work. I'm very active. I walk my dog. I row. So, it has not interfered overall with my ability to, you know, live life to the fullest.
(VO) Initially, Terry's doctors recommended a stem cell transplant, the traditional and often deadly treatment for myeloma, cancer of the bone marrow.
I wanted a third opinion. And my kids asked me, what are waiting, to hear what you want to hear? And I said, you're darned right. I got on an experimental trial for a drug called revlimid. For me, it drove my cancer right into remission. And I'm doing fantastic.
(VO) Eight years later, he's still taking the drug. But he's been to
I feel like I've licked it. I can live my life. I don't have to worry about dying of cancer.
(VO) There is no cure for metastatic cancer. But as Ellen, Jason and Terry prove every day, that doesn't mean they have to sit around waiting to die.
I've lived with cancer for seven years. I'm doing well. I'm living a full life.
I'm happier now than I was before I got sick.
Every day is precious. When I get up in the morning and I look outside, whether the sun's shining or it's raining, it's a great day.
(VO) And so, we choose Terry Barter, Jason Connolly and Ellen Rigby.
(OC) The three network broadcasts "Stand up to Cancer," will be an unprecedented to bring down the number of cancer deaths.
STORY 8. TO THE RESCUE
The other big story today, the government seizing control of the two of the largest, most vital players in the mortgage industry. If you have a home loan, there is roughly 50% chance that either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac is involved. But these two crucial companies have been dangerously weakened as home values drop and foreclosures rise. Here’s ABC’s Betsy Stark.
It is the largest ever take-over of a financial institution by the federal government in American history. But with home prices plunging and home owners defaulting on their mortgages in record number, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson said today the stakes were too big not to act.
“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are so large and so interwoven into our financial system that a failure of either of them would cause great turmoil here at home and around the globe.”
Fannie and Freddie finance or hold about half the mortgages in the
“You’d have to look back to the days of the Great Depression to see such a huge government intervention with such major implications.”
It was just two months ago that government officials assured the public Fannie and Freddie had enough cash to weather the storm. But today the government said the losses on the mortgage giants’ books were a lot bigger than they knew.
“The companies cannot continue to operate safely and soundly…”
A mission all the more critical now, with private lenders so reluctant to lend in the face of rising foreclosures and mounting losses.
“If you have no confidence in private institutions, ‘cause you’re worried about their abilities to survive, you know, you need someone like Uncle Sam who nobody will question the ability to survive, ahm, stepping in and actually acting as backstop. ”
Starting tomorrow Fannie and Freddie will be placed in a government conservatorship, similar to a bankruptcy. And for a limited time the treasury department will provide as much money as the companies need to cover any losses and continue guaranteeing new mortgages.
“It is gonna cost taxpayers. It looks like somewhere between 25 and 50 billion dollars, which is a lot of money, but it’s certainly not as much as it would have been if these institutions were allowed to fail.”
Part of the problem for the government and now for taxpayers is that Fannie and Freddie got way too big, too big to fail, if for that expression. But under today’s plan they will in the short run get even bigger, as the government gives them whatever cash they need to keep the American mortgage market going, Dan.
So, if you are looking for a mortgage or if you have one, what impact, if any, is there from today’s news?
Well, if you got a fixed mortgage and you are paying it, nothing changes for you. If you are looking to get a mortgage or looking to refinance your mortgage, the best case scenario is that mortgage rates may go down for you, if the government takeover is successful in stabilizing the mortgage market and restoring investor confidence in the market.
A lot of people will be happy to hear that. Betsy Stark, our business reporter, thank you.
STORY 9. MOST IMPRESSIVE BUGS
(OC) Finally tonight, we never know what is going to catch the eye of our Robert Krulwich. Now he, like I, is fascinated with massive construction projects. And there's a new 2,000 foot high building going up in
(VO) So these skyscrapers are pretty tall. This one's even taller. And this, the Burj Dubai skyscraper in
I'm incredibly impressed. But I'm also thinking in the back of my mind, there's another creature that has done equally or maybe even more impressive feats.
(VO) This is a termite mound in
They're up to about 26 feet.
(VO) So if we do a little comparing here, the human skyscraper being 2,000-plus feet tall, is the equivalent of - let's see, now if you say a typical human construction worker is, what, about 5'10?
Yeah, I'm 5'10".
You're 5'8".
Whatever, the guy is talking.
(VO) And you ask them to climb on top of each other, creating a stack of humans equal to the height of the Burj Dubai skyscraper.
This is not good for my back.
(VO) It works out that the highest building in the world is 343 human construction workers tall.
That’s pretty frigging tall.
(VO) Well, I don't know, because if you take a typical termite worker, how tall would they be?
Well, the termites standing on all six legs are about 1/14th of an inch, each one.
(VO) And you ask termites to stack themselves up to a height equal to 26 feet, it would take 4,000 termite workers to equal the height of their tallest mound. In other words, measured by worker-size, the termite structure is 11 1/2 times taller than the human structure. And did we mention this? Termites are blind.
But they are dramatically effective.
(VO) So much so, if humans wanted to equal what the termites have done engineering-wise, the tallest human building would have to be 4 1/2 miles tall. Close to
Very proud.
(VO) Robert Krulwich, ABC News.
(OC) I told you. He just notices the strangest things.
