Following God's Thoughts and His Command
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
(Isaiah 55:9, NIV)
Oswald Chambers emphasizes that the fundamental reason for missions is not the needs of those who do not believe, but the command of Jesus Christ. Of course, missions involve helping those in need, serving our suffering neighbors, and bringing the life-giving message of the gospel to others. Yet the starting point and ultimate purpose of missions are not human needs or our own plans, but the will and command of the Lord.
We tend to focus first on the needs we can see. We wonder which methods will be most effective, how much fruit we might produce, and whether our plans will succeed. But God’s thoughts are higher than ours. Even when we do not fully understand the path before us, we are called to obey in faith when God has commanded us to walk in it.
After His resurrection, Jesus gave His disciples a clear command. The Lord, who possesses all authority in heaven and on earth, commanded them to make disciples of all nations, baptize them, and teach them to obey His Word. He also promised to be with His disciples to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:18–20).
Therefore, missions are not about proving our own zeal or ability. They are about trusting the authority of Christ and obeying His command. Even when the results are not immediately visible, we must not lose heart. Our responsibility is not to force God's results according to our timetable or our own desires, but to faithfully proclaim the gospel wherever He has placed us.
The mission field entrusted to us today is not limited to distant countries. There are people waiting to hear the gospel in our homes, workplaces, churches, and neighborhoods. We are called to approach them with love, reveal Jesus Christ through our words and lives, and share the gospel whenever the opportunity arises.
Today's Commitment: I will not put human needs or my own thoughts above God's will. I will obey the higher purposes of God and the command of Jesus Christ. Valuing faithfulness to the Lord more than visible results, I will live as a witness of the gospel wherever He has placed me.
Key Sentence: Missions begin not with human need, but with the command of Jesus Christ, and continue through a life of obedience to God's higher purposes.
Related Scripture — Matthew 28:18–20 (NIV)
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”
