<It Is Best to Have a Title That Matches Your Role>
If people constantly call you “Mr. President,” but you fail to fulfill the responsibilities of a president, the energy carried by that title will eventually come back upon you.
Likewise, being called “Chairman” may make you feel good. But if you cannot fulfill the responsibilities that come with being a chairman, you must understand that the weight of that title can eventually work against you.
Students call their professor “Professor.” But if a professor fails to fulfill the responsibilities that come with that position, difficulties will inevitably follow.
This is because there are laws of nature that govern how we should live in this world.
Let us take another example. Suppose someone is given a grand name such as “Dae-ung,” a name that carries a sense of greatness. If that person cannot grow to match the stature of the name and accomplish work worthy of it, they may eventually be overwhelmed by the weight of that name.
When people call you by a great title or name, it is as though society is saying to you:
“Do great work worthy of that name.”
But if you carry a great title without doing the work that comes with it, you may eventually collapse under its weight. This is the law of nature.
So do not seek a grand name or title simply because it sounds impressive.
If you have been given a great name, you must study deeply, develop yourself, and become someone capable of accomplishing great things. The same applies when you are given an honorable pen name or title. Rather than being pleased merely because it sounds prestigious, consider whether you are truly capable of carrying the responsibility that comes with it.
If you cannot bear its weight, it is better not to accept such a grand title in the first place.
