Estonian Slackliner Jaan Roose Walks 120m Highline in Seoul
Performs South Korea's first high-altitude slackline event, drawing 20,000 spectators in Gwanghwamun
By Yun Seong-woo, Lee Mi-ji Published 2026.10.02. 00:40 The Chosun Daily Newspaper / 조선일보 On the 1st afternoon, a slackline (tightrope walking) event is held above Sejong-daero, Seoul. Estonia-born slackline athlete Jaan Roose walks on a tightrope installed 120 meters above. A 160-meter tightrope connects Koreana Hotel and Donga Media Center. This is the first high-altitude slackline event in the country. On the right side of the photo, Roos's image is being broadcast live on Koreana Hotel's electronic display. Photo by Lee Tae-kyung At 1 p.m. on October 1, in Gwanghwamun, Seoul. Jaan Roose (34), a slackliner, appeared 120 meters above ground—equivalent to the height of a 40-story apartment. He stood on a 160-meter-long, 2-centimeter-wide tightrope stretching between the Koreana Hotel in Jung-gu and Dong-A Media Center across the street. There were no balancing poles or safety nets. Only a safety rope connected Roose to the line. As Roose stepped forward with his arms outstretched, cheers of “Wow!” and “Oh my!” erupted from the crowd gathered in Gwanghwamun. Slacklining is an extreme sport involving walking or performing tricks on a tightrope. This high-altitude slackline event marked the first of its kind in South Korea. It was hosted by Red Bull Korea and sponsored by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Roose, an Estonian, is a three-time slackline world champion. In 2024, he crossed a 3.6-kilometer strait between mainland Italy and Sicily on a tightrope. Slackline athlete Jaan Roose walks on a tightrope installed above Sejong-daero, Seoul on the 1st. Courtesy of Choi Ki-woong Roose waved to the crowd while standing on the rope. He even lay flat, swinging his arms and legs. The scene was broadcast live via the Koreana Hotel’s electronic display and Seoul’s YouTube channel, “Seoul Live.” After arriving at the opposite building in about 15 minutes, he caught his breath and climbed back onto the rope. On his return, he performed a bat-like trick, hanging upside down. He swung from one hand while waving the other and did push-ups on the rope. The round trip of 320 meters took less than 30 minutes. Crowds exclaimed, “I’m sweating from nervousness” and “My heart is pounding.” The Seoul Metropolitan Government estimated that around 20,000 citizens gathered to watch the high-altitude performance. Min Ji-hwan (34) continuously clicked the shutter of his camera with a telephoto lens. “I never expected to see such an exhilarating sports event in Seoul,” Min said. “I waited for 30 minutes in advance to witness the thrilling moment.” Richard Garrett (60), a tourist from the U.S., said, “I’m lucky to have seen this before my departure tomorrow.” Roose performed twice that day, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. He became interested in Korea after experiencing traditional Korean tightrope walking four years ago. “Every step was a challenge,” he said. “I’m proud to have completed the event safely thanks to the support of the Korean audience.” · This article has been translated by Upstage Solar AI. |
